I know what'cha mean Ocedion. I was just describing somebody in another thread. Anywho I can agree with you to a certain extent. Some people are fat because they choose to be that way and the only other outlet for them is to eat. Others are that way because they have no control of the matter.

It's Like That

Due to the current financial restraints the light at the end of the tunnel will be turned off until further notice.

How mighty of you to sit there and to judge another person who may not have as much self-control as you or is just that way due to biology.

While you are venting, how about you give this person some advice. How about you tell them that what they are eating is not good for them. How about you tell them how you've stayed in shape (assuming that you are), etc...

I feel your frustration, but am I wrong to say that we all have discipline/self-control issues with somethin in our lives?

It may be food, or chocolate, or sex, or gambling, or falling for the wrong person, or procrastination, etc...

What I do think is wrong is for people to blame others for their own decisions, or lack thereof. We are all flawed diamonds, and there should be no shame in admitting it, all the while pursuing improvement.

To Ocedion:

Question? These obese individuals as you perceive as "weak," are you pro-active in offering up encouragement and support to these individuals that ARE aware of unhealthy life-styles? And that are attempting to change their physical state to an optimal state of wellness? For why kick a man when he is down? This is akin to knowing that someone is a drug addict and rather then influencing change of his/her mind-set, that person is continually seen as less than and not given the opportunity to BEcome productive.

However, obesity in this land has become disportionate. Obesity is not just a "black problem," oh no, it is a problem in Amerikka. Read on...

African American organizations to share $1.2 million
Dateline: April 2005

Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt has announced the award of $1.2 million in grants to improve efforts to reduce obesity among African Americans through a new partnership with national African American organizations.

"The obesity epidemic is one of the major health challenges facing our nation, and African American communities are highly affected by this disease and its health consequences," Secretary Leavitt said in a press release. "The initiative we are announcing today will mobilize three of the nation's premier academic and civic organizations to join us in a new partnership to mount critical prevention efforts in the African American community."

"Obesity is a risk factor for many diseases which disproportionately impact minority populations, including heart disease, some cancers, diabetes, and stroke," said Dr. Garth Graham, HHS deputy assistant secretary for minority health. "Because these problems affect multiple groups, we will also be announcing a second phase of the initiative in the near future, which will focus on reducing obesity among Hispanic populations."

An estimated 129.6 million Americans, or 64 percent, are overweight or obese. Obesity and overweight have been shown to increase the risk of developing serious and often disabling medical conditions. Adult African American women had age-adjusted obesity rates of 48.8 percent, compared to 30.7 percent for adult white women, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the period 1999-2002. African American girls and boys also had higher rates of overweight than white children in the same age groups.

The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), Silver Spring, Md., will work with the National Urban League, New York, N.Y., and the National Council of Negro Women, Washington, D.C.

The National Urban League will pilot-test an Urban Health and Fitness Campaign focused on physical activity, nutrition and prevention of diseases such as diabetes. Working through selected local affiliates, the project aims to develop comprehensive community action plans, influence school-based curricula and health/fitness activities, and provide technical assistance to meet community needs.

Initiatives planned by these organizations include prevention, education, public awareness, and outreach activities intended to bring about a greater understanding of the impact of obesity on other conditions.

I am glad and will go on record as stating that I myself have helped and will continue to help other individuals in their battle of the bulge. Between their own negative feelings about their bodies and prompting them to get up and lets go, yes, it was and is hard. But the end results of knowing that they are cognizant of healthier life-styles and possibly longer life spans has been well worth my efforts.

"The journey of a thousand miles...begins with a single step." Be well, Ocedion.

I do what I can to make sure that my eight year old grand niece, and her two younger siblings eat healthy foods when I can. They love to walk and ride their bike. If we can start with the children, maybe they will develop healthy eating habits and healthy lifestyles.

When dealing with overweight adults, calling them fat or making any negative comment about their weight won't really work. If you offer positive encouragement, mention the health benefits that come with losing weight, that would probably go a long way. Offering to exercise with the individual would be (should be) helpfull.

There are some people that make the effort to do the right thing but it will take time. Be patient. Some people have a medical condition that makes it harder for the weight to come off.

I know a few people that should consider pushing away from the table a little sooner. I've watched some people eat and they can really put away some food to the point of stuffing themselves.

I feel you what you are saying, and which is the logical thing to say, but how can you not have control over what you eat?? They know not to eat poison right. That sounds like control to me.

You can bring a horse to the water but you can't make it drink. I only help people who help themselves. Complaining about ganing weight is not helping yourself.

Compassion for each other is so lacking on this planet. It appears the spirit of condemnation is abundant and taking over. I will never allow myself to be filled with that spirit. We all have issues and true their are those who do fall in the category of overeating but have you done research on the drugs that are in foods? I suggest reading some of Conscious Rasta material on drugs and food. It is very enlightening.

@Oceidion,

If I may ask, what is your height and weight? Or better yet, what is your bodyfat ratio?
