SO NOW UR BLACK ????
JUST WONDERING ????
Has anyone else seen Mariah Carey on the cover of ESSENCE ????
I get frustrated with a lot of BLACK stars that abandon their African AMerican culture, but get into "trouble" and suddenly want to be accepted.
For instance....
Michael Jackson
We rarely saw Michael, he spent a lot of his time overseas performing. BUT when the shhhhhh hit the fan with these molestation charges.......He wanted to call Oprah and be a MUSLIM ?????
OJ ??? We won't go there
Mariah Carey
Does anyone remember when Mariah hit the scene, and everyone wondered about her ethnic background ?? It took her a while to actual come out, and admit that her father was bi-racial. Ohhh, she went on Oprah crying and whining about how her life as a child was so horrible, how she hated her hair, and couldn't deal with the fact that her father was bi-racial. Things got so bad for her as a teenager, that she had to go see a therapist !! BUT now......she down !! She got a divorce, things looked grim, but the african americans that she ignored for so many years embraced her !! Which, was done solely to keep her money flowing !!
What's up with this ???

I was just telling my friend last night...Mariah don't look nay black...i'm sorry she doesn't and I didn't understand why Essence claimed she was America's misunderstood black woman. No disrespect but at this point Mariah looks more latina than anything I mean I still don't see her proclaiming her black pride.

This what I'm saying !!!
When Mariah hit the scene for the very first time, she ignored questions dealing with her ethnic background. This chick had a powerful voice, and looked odd ( to say the least ) , she had a big nose and long rough ( looking ) hair. EVERYONE wanted to know her actual race. She'd never give a str8 answer. Then she married one of the richest men in the business, got divorced, and felt like her career was at stake. This chick got naked and started doing videos with all of the high profiled Black men in the business.
I mean you should've seen her on Oprah, everything she said basically meant .....she hated being Black. She hated having that hanging over her. Her mother appeared as well, nice looking white lady, but all she said was how hard it was to straighten Mariah's Hair !! They made jokes about how that was the best part about being rich !! I just found it insulting !!
AND I was pissed to see her on the cover of Essence .....MISUNDERSTOOD ??? Well, maybe they need to air the tape of that old Oprah show. Surly, she'll be understood then !!!!!!!
OOPS...... That would only mean that no one will purchase her new CD

Essence and Ebony magazine sometimes act like a magazine version of BET; doing anything for ratings and viewership.
Frankly, I'm surprised Oprah even gave her the time of day.
This is another example why as black people, loving our people, we should care who is truly pro-black, accepting of their culture and heritige, and how is not.

AMEN !!!!!
Oprah entertained her pitiful story b/c at the time Oprah was going through her own issues and identity crisis. Not to mention the fact that Mariah wanted to play the "I'm a victim" role.
I've been pissed off about this for a while !! It's all about money. We except their BS and sad stories b/c they're rich. If these ppl were everyday black folks, (who dissed Blacks) ran to white folks for assistance and LOVE, we wouldn't give a DAMM about their "sad songs" .
There's no way Mariah should be on the cover of Essence, there's NO WAY Michael should've been considered MUSLIM !!!
What the hell is going on ??
TRUE SELLOUTS INDEED !!!

I think it's a commentary on how interracial relationships have hurt children, especially when the parents are ready to deal, or don't have the tools to educate their children. I don't blame Mariah for how she feels. But then again, Oprah ain't the blackest woman on the face of the earth, she's just darker. That don't make her blacker....Look at who she has in her audience? I give the girl props for at least trying to make amends with herself and deal with the issue.
We as black folks need to stop beating up on each other and help those who want to be helped and educate those who want to be educated...Bunk the ones who could care less. Heck, until I told some man who was hittin on me that I was black, he ASSUMED I was Puerto Rican. Black folks can and do look like a myriad of others.

Isn't Essence now White owned? Don't you think this has something to do with it? Also doesn't her record company work under Time Inc.?
Think about it...

you beat me to it........but good point still.
This magazine came out I believe a couple weeks after the transfer of power. I was disgusted but not surprized to see it.
As for mariah....had she claimed blackness from day one....I would accept her and respect her position....but she did like Mike and OJ and basically waited till things went wrong to try and rep for the community....or rather have the community rep for her. You cant do that. I am in no position to tell her she aint black.....but she does not have my support and she has absolutely no right to request the community to stand behind her.
Good post MRA

And co-signed behind you Blak! I well recall when BET sold out...almost overnite the whole format was changed. This bears watching with ESSENCE magazine as I would dislike seeing a white-washing of sorts come into play here. And, ironically, "stayin' true to one's blackness and/or culture" is not predicated on partial or the "wholeness" of being black. Case in point, WHERE was OJ Simpson as a visible presence in the black community prior to him catching a case? And since he was exonerated, it is back to business as usual for him. So, from porcelain to blue-black in hue, it is a tragedy when an individual skirts around their ethnicity and heritage, and, much worse disown it.

I was just thinking on this issue of whether we should look at cases of denial of blackness based on mixed heritage, in the same light as denial of association with the black community among those who are clearly black. I was trying to figure which is worse....but that is pointless...it is all bad really.
I hope that no more magazines get taken over....and I hope that I dont start seeing articles on Tiger Woods as "the most misunderstood brotha" when his carreer cools off
