I'm trying to understand the facination with lighter skin/long hair to begin with. I'm not what you would call dark by any means. But I use makeup that is actually a shade darker than my on complexion as it gives me a more exotic/indian complexion. I've never liked or understood why most like "pale *** ghost white skin" in our culture. Most had a fit when I cut my hair, but I don't need it to feel/be beautiful. I actually get more compliments with it shorter. Hubby was against me cutting it at first. But after I had done it he loves, loves it with the layered style I have. It rests just above my shoulders.
But if lighter skin could get/keep a man - Halle Berry, Vanessa Williams, and the likes wouldn't be 0-2 on the marriage scene.

easy, 400+ years of slavery and brainwashing, that still exist today
our people being divided between light and dark in deciding who could work in the house and who had to work in the field
the paper bag syndrome
I could go on and on, but even today, where tv shows, music videos, celebrities etc that publisize it on a daily basis that lighter skin with long flowing curly hair is more attractive, even within our own cultures where people lock their hair call themselves loving their blackness i.e. some rasta's but have light bright, damn near white and white on their arm.
Celebrities that are mixed and don't want to associate with their afrikan side i.e. Tiger Woods Mr. Cablasian was it?
The constant repeated message for 400+ years and counting is why
