Racism from a high school teacher - AfroChat - African American

I am currently a senoir at a historically black high school called Lincoln College Prep in Missouri. Just recently, I was sitting in a classroom engaging in a conversation with a best friend. Now, I am mixed but VERY light in appearance, often being taken as white. After exiting the class, my teacher pulled me aaside to ask me why I talked like "them", referring to my crew. When I asked her what she meant, she simply rolled her eyes and said "those ghetto kids." When I explained my racial background to her, she sarcastically remarked, "Sure you are." Should I take this lightly, or as an insult on my race?

If she makes some more smart remarks, you may have to school her. Just make sure she doesn't get out of line with you.

Why are you even entertaining the thought of a "rebuttal" to her asinine comments? Chalk her up for what she is---"ignorant." This "adult" has had a life-time to be more accepting of other ethnicities and apparently she is living what she has learned.

All Mixed has to do is tell her once.....if she doesn't hear it the first time then, screw it. Take strength in not paying her any mind if thats the case.

We all live within a 10 minute drive of eachother. But we don't stay on the same block.

Be smart; build a case of all conversations with her and at a later time, report them to someone outside that school.

My stepdaughter (husband's) recieved the same treatment from her college teacher. She was getting info from her about her grades and was looking for a pen to write when her baby's picture fell out of her purse and the teacher saw it as she was picking it up to put it back. My daughter has a mixed (white) baby in which the father denies her because his parents don't want anything to do with her because she's black. Well, thats another story......

anyway......

The teacher took it upon herself to think that this baby might have been a white friend's child and was surprised when my daughter told her that the baby was hers. From that day on the teacher started giving her a hard time. She has transferred out to another school and will be graduating soon. But she hasn't forgotten about it.

This is a classic example of the many things that's perpetrated by whites to keep us down; Gatekeepers. These are whites (and others) who feel it's their individual duty to not allow us to slip by on "their watch". These are mindless, often uncreative humans who view the world in an expedient and convenient way that relegates us to no more than our color and "elevates" them to a superior status, or so they think so. Her basic end is to keep you thinking and acting "white".
So, I'll tell you what I would tell my kids.
It was a mistake to even let her know your "real color", shoulda kept the woman guessing. Milk her for info and help. Make her think you were right in her corner, then when on graduation day move on with a letter of recommendation signed by her, then let her know who you are and laugh in her face.
Now you must wear the pride for your nation. A great and diverse people of rotating color and colors of mirth and mayhem. Let her know that her own pride isn't only misfounded, but It's really all she's got, which is nothing. While you have the moon and the stars, unhampered by needless and debilitating predjudices and bigotry. If she needs reminding tell her of Percy Julien, or ALL of Jazz music, or tell her of Dorie Miller or the 54th Massechusetts. Mainly, look that heifer in the eye and let her know by your deeds and will that you came to represent.
Then sit back and watch her sweat!
