Living through your kids

I coach Pop Warner football, my team age range from 9-11 years old. Everyday I have to hear some parent talk about "when my baby makes it to the NFL", I rarely ever hear talks about the current grade their in or what their doing in school. Mind you this is about the time of the year when the dads become really interested in what their child is doing. I asked one father Monday, what school his kid went to; he told me one thing and his kid said another. These parents refuse to let their child live their own life. I hear shouts of "run the ball like daddy did" or "dad wouldn't have missed that tackle". Well I'm here to tell you Dad is old and hasn't seen a football field in atleast 10 years. Please stop living your life through your kids. For those mothers who think their baby is gonna get mommy that big house; check these stats

There are approximately 1696 players on NFL rosters
There are approximately 750 players on MLB rosters
There are approximately 600 players on NBA rosters

Approximately three in 10,000, or approximately 0.03 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic basketball will eventually be drafted by an NBA team.

Approximately one in 5,000, or approximately 0.02 percent of high school senior girls playing interscholastic basketball will eventually be drafted by a WNBA team.

Approximately nine in 10,000, or approximately 0.09 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic football will eventually be drafted by an NFL team.

Approximately one in 200, or approximately 0.5 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic baseball will eventually be drafted by an MLB team.

Approximately one in 250, or approximately 0.4 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic ice hockey will eventually be drafted by an NHL team.

Approximately one in 1,250, or approximately 0.08 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic soccer will eventually be drafted by an MLS team.

I know what you mean. I understand that we all want our children to become something great in life, but why do we give our kids the impression that if it is something where you don't make a million dollars it is not worth going after. Teacher's make the worst money, but it is one of the best jobs in the world that a person can have. I am not saying don't encourage your child to do his or her best in sports, but that is not all a child can do to make a difference in the world.

Black kids have a hard row to hoe in life. We don't get all the options. Certainly nothing wrong with dreaming of a child in sports. I am a sports fan and a music fan and would love for a child of mine to have a career in one of those, but I don't plan to limit them by planting the seed that they can only succeed in this field or that. Making choices on careers is one of the hardest things to do IMO but the possibilities in choices are endless and the kids need to be taught that there are MANY noble professions to get into.
