In the highly integrated Bay Area, knowing who is a racist is not always obvious. Now, I know it is only certain of the most aggressively hateful whites (like local neo-nazi types) who reject all N-words. Some more insidious conservative (slave master types) whites could accept a black presence as long as he/she was a good boy. These only hate "bad" negroes.

I've also learned to watch out for certain blacks who will set you up in order to please their master. Living under the white shadow seems to produce a number of that type.

You bring up an interesting point.

Living in an integrated area, like the Bay Area does present a challenge and an opportunity. I've lived in predominantly Black neighborhoods, White neighborhoods, mostly Hispanic ones, and evenly integrated spots as well. I agree that racism is not easy to spot in this case.

What I have also learned is that ignorance, hate, and ill-intentions come in all shapes, sizes and races.

To the point, there are White folks I trust and those I don't; there are a few Black folks I don't trust and a bunch that I do.

We all pre-judge, and using race as guidance is one way to go...but in the end, the actual deeds and spirit of the individual SHOULD win out.

I had a conversation with a Black woman some time ago and I said there were three kinds of White people, SMART White people, DUMB White people and BRAINY White people. She got annoyed with me for implying they weren't all alike.

I went to college for electrical engineering and have been dealing with electronics, stereos and computers for decades. There were about 50 CEs, Customer Engineers, in my department at IBM and about 6 of them were Black. If I wanted to exchange some deep, heavy information about computers and get some important knowledge I had to toal to one of THREE White guys. I never had a serious conversation about technology with the Black guys. They knew as much as IBM taught them just like MOST OF THE White guys.

The only other way to learn anything was find books and read a lot.

That doesn't necessarily mean I TRUST what I am told. I research the info I get.

What did Malcolm X and MLK say about technology and economics?

The White economists don't tell the White people how much they have lost on depreciation of automobiles over the last 50 years.

I certainly agree that there are "good" and "bad" people in every race (friendly people in unfriendly cultures & unfriendly people in friendly cultures). Finding out, who is who is the issue. And assumptions can be suicidal.

This is why assuming that a white person hanging with a black, must be truly friendly, was so foolish on my part. I did not know what type of friendship they had. And, I did not consider that not all racists come in the kkk/neo-nazi blind hatred form. I believe a slave master type (I use "slave master" for lack of a better term) of mentality accounts for most of the whites in my old neighborhood. True liberals were a minority.

Such types of whites there seemed to had picked through the neighborhood; deciding which black was a "good" boy and which was not. Apparently, I did not make the grade. So, certain people brushed me off.

Instead, certain of the more accommodating blacks did make the grade. Worse, it seemed as if the most treacherous & dirty blacks were the ones who could get closest to these whites. Does evil attract evil ???

You should talk to them man...follow them. Hound them. Annoy them. They will eventually pay you to go away. I can usually get lunch every day that way. While not talking to white people is certainly less annoying, it is to our own detriment to shut them out. We must first infiltrate their businesses and gain the knowledge that they have. Once we gain that knowledge, we can achieve what they have and then once we gan the power, we can choose which whites we want to talk to if any at all. If we are in the gutter, why would we choose to not talk to someone who we can use to get out of the gutter? You don't have to hang out with them, invite them to your house or go to their kids graduation but you should USE them to get what you want.

I am suspicious of all white people who try to befriend us. I think they are only doing this so that they appear cool in front of their peers.
