He calls himself Hova because according to him he is the saviour of Hip Hop. Jay Z is a Great MC , much better than these other wack rappers out today.

The last scene in the youtube clip, with him making a pyramid of his hands, and with a bright light shining from its midst, suggests that he, or at least who ever came up with the graphic for him, is asking the right questions.
Even the bible states we are gods. But, it is the rare christian, muslim, or jew who has any idea what that is supposed to mean. They think it blaspemy for a man to make himself God, even though that is _exactly_ what Jesus said we are:
John.10:32-34 - Jesus answered them, "Many good works have I shown you from my Father; for which of those works do you stone me?" The Jews answered him, saying, "For a good work we stone you not, but for blasphemy; and because that you, being a man, make yourself God." Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?" God is One With All. This message is syncretic with all religions once you dig past the traditions of men [tares] which invariably grow up to choke out the Word [wheat]. The challenge for every man is to resurrect the Self [the God in man] from the I-Ego, which the bible describes as meeting Jesus in the air.
Unfortunately, J-Zay's lyrics head off in the opposite direction. Rather than burying the Ego, he attempts to deify it ["I'm Big Dog, Glenn Rob, Listen God you a Flea"].

It's interesting you say that, because it's likely that Jay-Z is influenced by the Five Percenter movement.
The Five-percenters were popular in New York and other Eastern states before spreading westerly. Many rappers, from Nas, to Method Man, to Immortal Technique, to Gza have lyrics which reflect Five-percenter doctrine. Many singers like Erykah Badu have lyrics which do the same.
There are many Blacks here on the East coast who are deeply influenced by their teachings. Five Percenters believe that they are gods.
From Wikipedia:
"Five Percenters also teach that Black people specifically, and the entire world population more generally, can be divided into three groups:
* The 85%, easily led in the wrong direction hard to be led in the right direction, who are the humble masses, mentally deaf, dumb, and blind to the truth about themselves and the world in which they live.
* The 10%, who understand much of the truth but use it to their advantage to keep the 85% under their control through religion, politics, entertainment, economics, and other methods.
* The 5%, who are the enlightened divine beings, having repossessed knowledge of the truth regarding the foundations of life and of oneself, and seek to liberate the 85% through education.
The percentages presented, according to most Five Percenters, are not meant to be exact but are instead meant to represent the public, the religious and political rulers, and the few truly enlightened people on earth, respectively."
Sounds accurate, and like a good code to live by.
Five-percenter doctrine has been and remains infused in Hip-hop music and culture. That's why, if you're a Christian, you're not understanding the full picture and calling it blasphemy.

I see, interesting...but this could go on forever. I had a long conversation about it with college friends and there's so many perspectives. I agree, it could be a misunderstanding regarding interpretation especially if we coming from different books and backgrounds. it's not that i don't like him either, he is the "ish" as Skiz put it, Can/t knock the hustle is a classic and also loving Sorry I'm a champion (I think), and love Eryka, sTandardly! Just didn't get that and especially the aggressive way and context it's said in.
Hmmmmm....

The God as self idea is actually deeply embedded in Black speech. What up G? You may not know this, but G initially was short for God, and not Gangsta like a lot of people think. "G" in the Supreme Alphabet stands for God. Of course, when Hip-Hop moved from New York to Los Angeles, it turned into "Gangsta".

There was also a time when we called each other dog, god in reverse, not realizing that the Iceman's love affair with dogs [which was not shared by our African ancestors] may well be a freudian slip, a unconscious indication of his bipolar struggle between both the cross and the upside down cross:
And, the hiphop nation insists on calling each other boys and niggas without conscious thought of the unconscious negative self-programming involved. Black people, and not just black rappers, are caught up in a spiritual struggle between the forces of Light and Dark.
Music is an incredibly effective tool that the 5 percent can use to sneak into the minds of the 85%. The 85% do not just not know, they do not _want_ to know. But, being enslaved to the senses, they do like a good beat. So, a 5 percenter can hook them in with the esotericaly resonant 4/4, then while the Inner Door [ Sushumnadwara] between Atman and Jiva is propped open, various messages can be massaged into the involuntary mind.
Unfortunately, advertising agencies [the 10%] are also aware of this technique, which is why hip-hop is so popular as background music for ads to get you to spend money you don't have on four-wheeled altars of rubber and steel, and big macs, and KFC"s greasy chicken. And, also unfortunately, the hiphip nation is packed with brothers who have equated multi-million dollar product endorsement deals with success in this life.
But, it would be hypocritical to criticize them without also looking in the mirror and admitting that those young brothers get those 7 and 8 figure endorsements because most of us, the 85%, are so recalcitrantly committed to not know what we do not know.
The State killed Dr. King? -- yeah, but I gotta go to work.
Obama is against reparations? --- yeah, but he looks black like me.
Christianity justified the enslavement of my ancestors? --- yeah, but mama and nana told me I would burn in hell for all eternity if I did not bow to their Massa's whore of Babylon.

Christianity didn't justify the enslavement of our ancestors. Individuals did!
Being a ''christian'' means following the righteous example of the Messiah; not stealing, not committing murder, loving your neighbor as yourself, etc.
If you do none of these things, following the Torah as the Messiah asked of us (Mt 5:17-19/1 Jn 2:3-5) then you are not a ''christian''.
Being a ''christian'', a follower of the Messiah requires actions not words (1 Jn 2:6). If you are an enslaver, rapist or murderer you can't be a ''christian'', a follower of the messiah. The two are not compatible.
Despite all this i don't judge or condemn anyone to burn in hell for all eternity because ''while you point your finger someone else is judging you''.
Peace!

I am not a hip hop fan nor am I this fanatical religious person. He is following what the bible says and it says he is a God.
Psalms 82:6 says he is a God.

Yeah, individuals who happened to be christians. What, you think it was just mere coincidence that the klan chose to burn _crosses_ in the yards of black people? What, you think it is just mere coincidence that christian pastors not only condoned, but also participated in the lynching of our ancestors? What, you think it is mere coincidence that the man who is responsible for more deaths of non-white people than any other human being on the planet also happens to enjoy the political support of _most_ protestants and catholics in America?
Even Dr. King --- who called himself a Christian, but expressed and lived by some distinctly hindu spiritual beliefs --- had to admit that Sunday morning was the most segregated hour of the week.
And, dare I mentioned Pope Nicholas V's papal bull which blessed the _perpetual_ [his word, not mine] slavery of West Africa?
Popes For Slavery - Romanus Pontifex by Pope Nicholas V
How much worse does it have to get before black people wake up and stop drinking Massa's koolaid? Even to this day, _most_ black americans are still walking around thinking christianity is the religion of Jesus. It ain't. Christianity is the religion of Constantine.
If Jesus were alive today as a mortal man, Pat Robertson [a white christian] would be calling him a heretic and Obama [a black christian] would be holding press conferences to denounce Jesus for making "any statement that disparages our great country or serves to divide us from our allies."
