I have to admit, I'm getting a crash course in the experiences of other Black folks across the country. Growing up and living I the Bay Area, we have the same issues, but it never seems as cut & dry as it does for others.
On the point of Black business ownership; I know several Black business owners and one of them owns a liquor store. We have "Others" in the area too, don't get me wrong, but it's not as bad as it sounds elsewhere.
I owned a dollar store myself for a while. There were the usual challenges but it wasn't too hard, zoning wasn't a problem, getting a loan went OK. We had to shut down due to lack of support (and rising costs, it's hard to hold margin when you're locked in at a dollar price point). I understand the points made in previous posts, but in practice.....MY experience was different.
To the point of selling poison to the people. Put me in the self-policing camp of thought. I have alcoholism in my family, but I'm not an alcoholic. Neither are any of my immediate friends that I grew up with. We don't smoke either. Our corner liquor store (that was Black owned by the way) got our money with Lemonheads, Welch's grape soda and Hot Fries. Now a days, I rarely go into any liquor store.
It seems my mother did a damn good job of letting me know I can do (or not do) anything I set my mind on.
Is the answer that simple?

Amen!
I asked when living in Atlanta how it is they can get these business licenses. I was told because they are given a far different credit rating standard than Americans are. And would you believe the majority of them according to this particular person views African Americans as the lowest or least desirable of all mankind? I got this info from a lady of their descent. I was curious and she was willing to talk.. Amazing!

this is intriguing info, because in my travels in the middle east they loved black people.

I agree with Gorilla. I don't talk to these people. Just when i have too. The same Arab that's joking with you would shoot and enslave you in his country. Where do think many African tribes got their ruthlessness murdering rampages from? Arabs got a very twisted energy about them.

It is good that some people are getting away from the "The Arabs are our best buddies" stuff that the blacks who converted to Islam laid on us but I question putting their level of racism on par with that of the puritanical bigotry of the white man. The next people I'd think of after the white man could be the Japanese.
Many Arabs have clearly heavily mixed with black folk you can see it Moslem Arabs Anwar Sadat -- the late president of Egypt -- was the son of an Egyptian man and a Sudanese (black) woman. Anwar was quite dark himself but he married a light Arab woman (certainly not pure white though) and produced a brown daughter (with "straight" looking black hair) who is at least one fourth black. I've heard she did not want to be associated with black but like it or not her grand ma is Sudanese.
and in Christian Arabs too ( Have you seen a picture of "Brigette Gabriel" ? Whatever she says she looks very close to many a brown Afro/Am.
This is not to say that Arab color hatred has not been brutal and inhumane. I just think we need to avoid extremes here. Those people who think, "they got black blood, so they must all love us" also have a problem too and can get themselves and their own killed with that kind of thinking. But, the most inhumane and de-humanizing system of racial slavery ever devised arose from the puritanical thinking of white Anglos.
I tend to think Arabs are more on par with the non-puritanical whiteness of Latin America where the elite club readily accepts mixed whites, high yellows, and even a rich brown person as "white"; where the elite often proclaims " we are all mixed" while only hiring darkies (Latin American Native Indians, & Blacks) to clean the horse stable; where the Brazilian blacks have been lullibied to sleep by the pretense of racial neutrality when in truth Spanish/Portugese society has just been less rigid and blatant in their preference.

I live in the Middle East and to tell you the truth I am african origin and black skin and Ihave arab blood also. I still have to fight to acquire my status. I think that the black people should work to prove themselves. It is very obvious that we sit and wait for miracles to happen and save us and blame it on the white people & Arabs. The blacks who fought to acquire status they do succeed, prove themselves
By the what is your definition for the Arabs
peace by upon you all

When you say acquire status, are you referring to acquiring wealth, the respect of peers, or what?

Most of the Middleeastern descended (liquor) 'party' store owners here are Chaldean Christians...
And also how about we try to rise above some obvious stereotypes since all Muslim Arabs are no more united than anybody else?
But are some as bigoted and racist as some white people??
Just ask some survivor in a refugeee camp in Darfur...
My and the and more to the point:
We need and should want to stop reacting and respond to the challenge as regards seeing our and our peoples relationship other people here and there and everywhere
as candidly and honestly and objectively as we can...
Making it personal and/or be subjective about it all will resolve none of the ongoing issues and problems we have when it comes to any other ethnic or racial group...
Also the issues and problems which truly plague us and our people here had and have little or nothing to do with Chadian and Arab small business owners...
Instead we're all being plagued by the likes of Big Business and Big Government advancing the vested interests of the white rich folk at everybody else's expense?
Why else invade an Arab country whereas everybody knows the Iraqis had nothing to do with those 9/11 attacks?!?
Yes it was and is about the oil!
It's also about internal conflicts...
And this nation needed to quit playing world cop after the disaster they brought about which we now call the Vietnam War...
Instead do find out more about rich white folks investments around the globe and then you'll find out why some of those aformentioned people wind up emmigrating here...
Or as I do put it:
Yes...
Such folk do have a lot of cash...
But...
They don't have any 'class'...
Those among our own who blandly and blindly mimic them need a reality check....
Big time...
FYI...
