Shouldn't we black folks know this?
We know we don't need to be shaking our behind half naked to get attention from any man. we know we don't need to be called derogatory names. we should know that we don't have to take abuse from anyone. We know we don't need to sell ourselves or settle for anything less. we know that we are beautiful black people and we know that we can stay that way.

We should sis but some are still mentally asleep, they are the biblical LAZARUS. The realisation will come when we see that the dollar that we are losing it for will not be worth much. Maybe then we will begin to recognise our intrinsic value...
We as sisters MUST continue to show love to our sisters in order to get them to appreciate and value self...
I do believe though the majority of our people are 'good'
just my 2 cents
peace

The more I travel and learn the more I realize that many people who look like I do either do not care or are not aware of cultural and social norms. What some of our communities consider cultural norms just aren't. We give a pass to anyone that behaves unseemly because "it's what we do". Says who? Continuous irrational behavior is indicative of much broader issues.
Howerever some of those people that we see practicing the things mentioned, just need a little guidance. Many of them have no clue that some of what they engage in on a daily basis is socially unacceptable.
If mama did it, and auntie is doing it, daddy said it, and grandpa was ok with it...the neighbors don't mind...then that's what happens. No one speaks out about it so it continues.

It will only sink in when it stops being so widely accepted.

but why do women degrade themselves if they want respect from any man? Women say they dont have to shake their butts or take things from a man but why will women go to great lengths to degrade themselves?

Why?
Everything we do in "modern society" is a result of programming. Women didn't just get up one day and decide to degrade themselves. Men didn't just start being slack and lazy and disrespectful to women, all this happened over time, through genetic, social, educational, religious and media programming. All the songs we sing, the movies we've watched, the games we've played, the lessons we've learned have all been tainted with European thought. History has shown us that Europeans are the most perverted thinking and acting beings on the surface of the planet and we have done nothing but adopt their ways and habits because OUR true ways and habits were ripped from us. If we don't know how we treated our women when we were Kings and Pharaohs, how do we expect our women to act when we treat them like the European given titles we so eagerly grab onto like "pimp, playa, and even strong Black Man"?
It's not about pointing fingers but by accepting responsibility for our condition and starting the process of FIXING IT!

To your guestion I don't when it will sink in to the masses. MY kid told me that this girl for school was dressing up as a ghetto girl for halloween. That made my head snap back and say when did that become a so called halloween costume? It is something to make you pause and think.
