African Union offers Dual Citizenship to Black Americans!

When you’ve finished reading this, there are two things you should do. First, tell every black man, woman and child you know and love about this. Second, sign the petition ! It only takes ten seconds, is secure and private, and it is just that important!

And now...

Not sure if you knew this, but the African Union--the African version of the European Union--has made a monumental decision and has decided to offer full dual citizenship to Black Americans in participating African countries of the African Union. Their aim, say Union leaders, is to “tap into the technological expertise and education of Black Americans” to help solve some of the most daunting challenges facing Black Africa today. On the flip side, Black Americans will gain a long overdue true, legal connection to the African continent and their ancestral roots.

Besides reconnecting to long severed genealogy, African Americans stand to gain a number of fringe benefits by seeking dual citizenship. Among other things, this will include the right to buy and sell land, the right to own and operate businesses, and the opportunity to take part in the political and legal processes of their second nation.

As exciting as this may be, the members of the committees who are drafting this proposal have been defining and redefining the language of the proposal for over four long years. In 2008, at the Annual African Union Summit, Union leaders plan to unveil their first tentative plan that will define their vision of the dual citizenship proposal.

There is an online petition (click here for petition) that will be printed and mailed in bulk by the thousands to the African Union before the summit in 2008. Show your support of the dual citizenship proposal to give African Americans dual citizenship in African Countries. Convince the African Union leaders that Black America wants dual citizenship in Africa and that it is time for the proposal to be turned into law. And let the resurrection of the great continent of Africa Begin.

This is 400 years in the making, people. Black Americans have been suffering the psychological brain damage of severed ancestral ties to their true African roots for far too long. At the same time, much of Africa has been suffering from the deadly virus of colonization, poverty, and disease for longer than necessary. It is time we showed support for our once ancestral continent.

That sounds all fine and dandy as you have listed all of the advantages, but what about the disadvantages?

If the aim is to have African Americans obtain dual citizenship in Africa, how is that possible when not all of the African states allow you to have dual citizenship. (Correct me if I am wrong).

What happens if war broke out in Nigeria, for example, or there is some kind of upheaval in that country, of which you have dual citizenship?

As for it bein' only for us Americans, all things have to have a start somewhere. Then branch out...generally that's just how things work.

True, but I'm sure there is more to it than that.

Question: Does the USA allow its citizens to have dual citizenship?
I suppose it must if Africa is offering dual citizenship to African American?

First , thank you all for the replies, and for asking such good and insightful questions.

To Corals:

Quote:
If the aim is to have African Americans obtain dual citizenship in Africa, how is that possible when not all of the African states allow you to have dual citizenship. (Correct me if I am wrong).
One of the reasons this proposal has been in the works for four years, is because there were many issues that had to be worked out first, such as getting countries that did not allow dual citizenship to change their policies. Also, I have written the African Union Information liaison and asked for specifics about which countries so far are offering full dual citizenship--what I have learned so far is that 12 nations, including Nigeria, Ghana, and Tanzania are all for it, and many others are very much for the proposal, but of course, the language is still being worked out. Which is the reason they are unveiling their tentative plan at the 2008 summit, and it is also the reason for the petition. We need to show them how much support there is here in America for the proposal.

Quote:
What happens if war broke out in Nigeria, for example, or there is some kind of upheaval in that country, of which you have dual citizenship?
First, America does allow dual citizenship, and in fact they have very few restrictions on what you can do as a citizen of a second nation. However, there is one very important restriction. You cannot join a foreign army. If a dual citizen joins a foreign army, they effectively would lose their American citizenship. Secondly, I doubt that most Black Americans--at least in the first 25 years of such a proposal--would take such a bold step as to move to leave America permanently and join a foreign army. And while we cannot control what an entire nation does, and while each nation in Africa has its ow history, culture, and historical enemies, part of the reason for this bold initiative by the AU is to employ, as they put it, "the expertise and education of Black Americans" to help solve their most challenging puzzles.

Your questions were very thoughtful, Corals, I hope that I at least partly answered them.

To Saphari,
Quote:
which countries would we receive citizenship and which would we not?
Please refer to my response to Corals for part of this answer, but again, what I have been able to find out so far is that 12 nations( very large nations, too) have already signed on, and many other nations are in the process of "negotiations." When I receive a response from the Au and Summit members, i will post it here. But again, the summit is next year( 2008) when they will reveal the full plan, so I am not able to find out everything just yet.

Quote:
and why is this petition only for us americans? we're not the only people in the Diaspora.
As XenOcidE pointed out, it must start somewhere. Hashing out a plan to offer 30+ Million African Americans citizenship is difficult enough, but offering that same thing to 600+ Million is a whole nother ball park. It must start somewhere. Also, if you check out some of the news articles that I have posted about the proposal, you will read that many African leaders have already expressed that they too beleive that eventaully the offer will be made to all in the Diaspora. But, of course, you cannot build a house without first laying a brick.

Such good questions coming from this board! Give me a few minutes and I'll post more articles on the subject.
