TV One isn't perfect, but they're definitely a far cry better than BET, which is just an urban MTV nowdays. Trash, trash, and more trash... but hey, you can make up for all that weekday sinful trashy BET programming on Sunday!

I too, was dishardened to find that BET has yet again choosen to capitalize on unfortunate African-Americans. "Hot Ghetto Mess" is bad enough as a website but as a TV show...PLEASE STOP!! The show being on BET is no surprise. As far as I'm concerned BET has not shown quality programming since the early 90's and as long as some of the "ignant negroes" choose to fill their empty heads with some of the garbage that they create for them, we as a people will continue to fall prey to the sociological & psychological
"traps", if you will, they try to put before us. At this rate, you might see people in "blackface" again.

Why be shocked? Remember, its was bought out by Viacom thanks to Johnson and the damage is done. So far the only thing of substance that I scene thus far were the Legends Tributes on their awards ceremony and that's it.

So, this is how Donaldson calls for "a new era of self-examination"? Seems to me, he needs to start with himself.

At this present time most of the BET programming is a disgrace to our people and Charlie Murphy should be ashamed of hosting this show.
I think if you want half-way decent programming I turn to TV ONE (which is not perfect).

Bravo to Home Depot and State Farm...as for Charlie Murphy, I guess needs the work really bad!

It's refreshing to see sponsors taking a stand. And you're right about TVOne, they are on the right track that BET had set before Johnson sold out to Viacom.

Considering the stereotypical element of the show, I definitely see your point. Of course , with Charlie being a controversial comedian, he knows no boundaries especially when you take in consideration the stunts/off the wall antics that he pulled on the Chappelle Show.

So true. But I'm not surprised at BET. It is a sewer of bad taste and programing that has aggressively contributed to extolling and perpetuating some of the most negative, degrading and insulting images of black people. It is Coon Central. A modern day Amo's and Andy video channel. It is the launch pad for thuggish gangsta rap and all the anti-social, ignorant and misogynistic images of black people. I've seen the Hot Ghetto Mess website and it is a mess! But to promote a TV program celebrating and promoting Negroes self mutilation and degradations is too much. I'm glad someone stood up and said no to an already horrible situation of Negroes happily degrading themselves.

It's very ironic that the tagline for this show is "we got to do better" and BET is clearly not making any attempts to do better. I will give them props for attempting to come up with some original programming these days. Their last few new shows have been MTV knock-offs. Baby steps?
But the bottom line is they have to do better.

BET Sticking With 'Mess'
By Jon Lafayette
BET executives Sunday defended their upcoming program “Hot Ghetto Mess,” which has already had advertisers pull out because of claims that it features negative depictions of African-Americans.
BET Entertainment president Reginald Hudlin, speaking Sunday at the Television Critics Association meeting in Los Angeles, said BET was going forward with the program, noting none of those criticizing the show had seen it. It’s scheduled to air later this month.
The program is based on a Web site that, through photos and videos, illustrates socially and politically incorrect behavior, mostly by African Americans. Mr. Hudlin, who took the reins at BET two years ago, said the show was part of the network’s effort to address those problems in a way that would be appealing to 18 to 34-year-old viewers.
“The biggest critics are going to be the biggest fans,” he said.
Mr. Hudlin said the network did not present the show to critics at the TCA meeting because it wasn’t finished. Nor has the show been presented to advertisers.
Nonetheless, the ruckus over the show has already caused Home Depot and State Farm to pull their ads.
While the controversy likely will bring attention to “Hot Ghetto Mess,” Mr. Hudlin said he’s concerned that the network’s other shows could be overlooked.
“We’re not doing escapism,” Mr. Hudlin said, adding that with a broad programming slate, BET is trying to be the “responsible broadcaster people want us to be.”
