Are You Too Black?

TOO BLACK

They take my kindness for. . . . . WEAKNESS.

They take my silence for. . . . . SPEECHLESS.

They consider my uniqueness. . . . . STRANGE.

They call my language. . . . . . SLANG.

They see my confidence as. . . . . CONCEIT.

They see my mistakes as. . . . . DEFEAT.

They consider my success. . . . . ACCIDENTAL.

They minimize my intelligence to. . . . . POTENTIAL.

My questions mean I am. . . . . UNAWARE.

My advancement is somehow. . . . . UNFAIR.

To voice concern is. . . . . DISCONTENTMENT.

If I stand up for myself I am too. . . . . DEFENSIVE.

If I don't trust them I am too. . . . . APPREHENSIVE.

I am defiant if I. . . . . SEPARATE.

I am fake if I. . . . . ASSIMILATE.

My character is constantly. . . . . UNDER ATTACK.

Pride for my race makes me. . . . . "TOO BLACK."

I had a boyfriend in college---he was beautiful, gifted, bound for med school, etc. He was also biracial and (I soon discovered) had an odd attitude toward Black people...he considered me "acceptable" because I was focused on my studies and spoke "proper" English in class (I'm sure you know where I'm going with this) but we hosted a casual dinner party at our dorm one evening and he took me aside & commented on one of my Black friends. He said, "Your friend is just TOO BLACK for me, she's so LOUD and AGGRESSIVE and DEFENSIVE about every little thing!". That was the beginning of the end of our relationship. I was so hurt and confused---but later became angry. Now I just pity him. He's now off at med school, dating a White woman (whom he's cheating on, apparently, since he still calls me in a vain attempt to "reconnect") and moving through life with his soul on ice. So with that in mind, I'd have to say I'm definitely "too Black" and damned proud of it!

Oh---and let me add that my "too Black"/"too loud"/"too aggressive" friend is STILL my friend---a Sister for LIFE!

I think it's funny how some black people consider themselves 'less black' when they can speak gramatically correct or be more educated, yet around white people they talk badly about their own ethnicity and whites think no differently about them than with the ones that are 'too black/ghetto/etc.'
