Serinety,

I consider myself as a leader and categorize it as “actual”. (Some have “potential” leadership) b\c I as an individual I influence and motivate others. I help coach “Rec” basketball and I want to emphasize the word “help” b\c I’m deficient in the different plays but I’m proficient in what I want to impart onto these young adults. And most of them leave the squad a better son.

We (i and the head coach) get told often how our way of coaching has changed their child. I’m content in my position. Most people have the potential to lead but don’t b\c most are looking for titles emphasizing authority, i.e. “head coach” as opposed to “asst. coach” .

Leadership implies power, but you have to have the power to guide others, this society is Inundate with this systematization of titles and unless some people have the top spot in this hierarchy, they don’t and won't get involved.

sekhmet

Call me young and naive, but I do think that I can make a difference, so I'm trying to put myself out there to get that done.

No you are not naive. And I applaud you and your efforts. What you are is an “actual” leader, and you are doing more in your endeavors than most people or organizations that have a multitude of resources are doing.

Like Muhammad said: “you don’t need a lot of great men, one will do”

Serenity's points are well made. I'd like to add onto those with the sad fact that many blacks are even becoming replublicans, forsaking all that they are a part of.

Nice to see a long time intellectual back on the AC!

As far as JFP and DR's rant on rap; I don't see the correlation with the topic. I do agree with you both on the demise of the quality of hip hop; that's undeniable.

i re-read my post; i did diviate from the topic at hand. i saw the word "rap" and became agitated at what has become of something we started, something we can do and no other race can do as well, and also at our ignorance of the power we wield and how oblivious we are of it. my apologies.

and in some cases these terms are well placed, used in the right context, and never fall on deaf ears. and allies are to be found, no matter what the message is; someone will always listen.

Oh, is that so? Anyone who really understands the true platform of the Republican party and the Democratic party, would not make the comments you just made. for the most part, the republican and Libertarian agenda is conducive to Whites because they are the cultural and economic majority with a totally different history, future, valueset and agenda than blacks.

Anytime you think your even remotely capable of debating me on why I should be a GOP sellout, I eagerly await the 'challenge'.

The only deaf ears my comments will fall on are folks like yourself that now somehow thinnk that being a republican or libertarian (republican in sheeps clothing) is better for me and my people.

You think you got it, bring it....

As much as it pains me to agree with the Afro-Republican on the site (that's an oxymoron), Mckinney is far from intellectual. But I'm sure our reasons for feeling this way are a mile apart.

We,as indiviuals,do our part for the community but we are only individual fingers on a hand. When we put all our ideas together, agree upon them with some critical thinking, then act in one swift movement, then we become a fist. I personally think that everyone on this site has the skills to lead and organize so why not put it all together. We can start locally, then regional, then country wide.

For my part, I’m not taking leadership roles in my community because I don’t feel as though I’m ready to. One has to get one’s own house in order before they begin cleaning the houses of others. Around the time when I was first on this site, I was starting/ maintaining a small business that wasn’t as successful as it could have been and I’m still recuperating financially from that. So I plan to get re-involved in leadership roles in my community soon as I am gaining more of a hold on my own affairs recently.

So I suppose I could be considered a “potential leader” by some.

I wholeheartedly agree with this stance and it segues into another point I wanted to bring up. While there are many people working to better their local communities and in this way can be considered leaders to a degree, jcsump’s initial post seems to be a call for a leader who can challenge our entire capitalist system. But many of the few black intellects able and willing to lead our people stop at these local levels. Why do you think this is true? And how do we turn local leaders like sekhmet and darkreign into the national leaders we so desperately need - the organizers who can bring together other local leaders for nationwide change?

As a side note, although I am very interested in the back and forth on black political allegiances, I think it may detract somewhat from the topic of this particular thread (correct me if you disagree) and respectfully request that that argument be started on a new thread.

If I may be so bold, I believe there are many legitimate Black intellectuals right here at AC! I'd like to think I'm a "fresh new thinker" and I do believe that you are as well. Feel me?
