Ignorance or acknowledgement?

I heard on the news this morning that the online version of the Oxford English dictionary has added a number of urban slangs to their English language dictionary. Among them are : Benjimans, hoochie, thugged out and crack hoe..

Now since most of these words are used in our communities how will this effect us? Is this good news?

I don't see this as good or as bad. It damn sure won't help.

Some of the words that they added are ridiculous. "Crack hoe"??? What can we expect? This is the same dictionary that added Homer Simpson's doh! to their list of words.

It's acknowledgement. The purpose of the dictionary is to identify what are establish words in the language, rather than make a judegemenet about their appropriateness. Anyone can create a word. But it won't show up in the dictionary until it becomes commonly used, having a specific or definitive meaning, for a sustained period of time.

Well many of those terms about time they are commonly used, Black people don't really use them anymore.

I don't see how this can effect us either way.

The only thing I want the 'dictionary' staff to do is to kill the "N" word. Not only the dictionary staff but blacks. Kill the "N" word and we're on our way to united liberation.

God does not refer to blacks as the "N" word, niether should we.

every language has slang

that they use, so these words being in the dictionary are no different. I do agree, the "n" word needs to go though.

I agree 110%. Update: Etymologists, researchers, consultants, etc. have REFUSED to remove the "N" word from this dictionary.

I dont think that these words being in the dictionary will affect us but whats the purpose? why? Is it really necessary to put these words in the dictionary. What are we teaching the kids?
