The Show Good Times!!! - AfroChat - African American

I was reading a thread about this show with my daughter the other night and a few questions came to mind.

1. Why was it that when James had money in his pocket, Florida always seemed to get nervous and tell him to give it back knowing they lived in the projects and every dime counted?

2. James was making $3.30 an hour and although things were tight, they managed to pay rent?

3. Thelma had her own bedroom and always dressed nice but JJ and Michael had to sleep on a let-out couch in the living room?

4. Everytime it seemed as though the Evans family were (trying) to move up something held them back?

5. While living on the South Side (Cabrini Green which ain't no joke) they always left their front door unlocked and anyone could walk in on them at any given time?

6. Why wasn't Thelma employed? I mean she always behaved like a child even throughout her adult years by calling JJ names and hitting/slapping him?

7. Why did Thelma always wear that "FAKE" smile and smirk on her face all the time?

8. Why was it that after James passed away they started doing these benefit talent shows for other people instead of themselves when they knew deep down inside they could use the money?

9. Why was it that when James (Sr.) left the show and Wilona adopted Penny (Janet Jackson) she started behaving "Fass" everytime JJ showed up?

10. Did Keith have a real job? It seems that once he and Thelma got married he started calling all the shots, moved into Thelmas bedroom, left JJ and Michael on the couch and things got tougher.

11. Wasn't Michael suppose to be attending college by this time? Thelma and Keitih should've had their own apartment and JJ should've had a car instead of taking his dates on the CTA all the time?

12. Why was it when anyone on the show received a phone call, everyone was all up in the business looking nervous and if Florida was out of town, Thelma, JJ, and Michael would pass the phone with that annoying studder saying "Everything is OK" knowing damn well their lying?.. LOL

I just had to talk about this show with my daughter and how it was poorly written. Makes my skin shreek!!!.

How in the hell are you gonna win $5,000.00 and send Michael to college, give Thelma dancing lessons, move out of the projects, buy JJ the car he wanted and get Florida a mink coat????

TV is amazing ain't it.

Oh! My goodness!? I am embarrassed. Oh how I loved that show but, you're right. Since I know what it's like to live in a ghetto, I identified with parts of it but never saw the issues that you wrote about.

HAHA TV is something..But I do like how goodtimes showed that though the evans's may have been poor living in the jects, they stood by one another. James and florida would set the kids straight, and taught them to take pride in whatever they did. James wasnt a deadbeat, who only came around to his benefit. he worked hard and hung in there, though he was passed up when it came time for promotions.(racism, discrimination)He held it down for sure

. florida kept the house in order, just not anyone was running in and out of her crib at all hours of the night. She taught the kids to be responsible and respectful no matter who they were

. JJ was skilled as a painter(artist) and I believe they even hung his art on their walls,..displaying support for his craft..(I dig that) Thelmas always looking nice, not running around, strung out..sleeping with every,well you know.the young brotha mike, was not afraid to be proud.hell, he was PROBLACK!! Whatever problems they had, they handled it together..something missing in todays families I think.. where we hardly even have enough tolerance to sit down at dinner at the same time, and talk..Wilona even took it upon herself to adopt a little janet who was neglected & abused by her mom (where ya been penny??)..To me, the show didnt do half bad, considering how we could have been portrayed on TV at that time..
