Show Peer-Value Opinions via Reputations
I noticed in the logs this morning that although members are posting alot, and indicator of good subjects, members are not taking the time to give props to fellow members for reputations.
Reputations are the equivalent of giving up dap when a good idea or convo is started. And it's YOUR opinion! There are no rules to it, which is the real beauty of the reputation system. Just click on the hourglass under the user in a post you read.
Reputations should NOT be posted to express your level of agreement or disagreement. That's what healthy debate and discussion is for. You may not agree with someone, but if it's a healthy exchange of opinions, that should be respected.
Reps also work to the negative. Got someone always trippin, offending people, posting stupid or devisive stuff, express your opinion.
I've made Repuation tracking confidential, so you don't know who gave them, allowing people to be honest and unafraid of retribution.
There is also a tactic in place so the same user cannot keep getting reputations from the same person repeatedly, driving up their value unfairly.
Because "Your Word is your Bond" here, you must rep others to before returning to that user.
When used honestly, and fairly the Reputation or "props" system is a great way to build up a community.
So support each other and REPresent.

Well, if you've offended someone, or you don't post alot, or you don't give rep to other people, you can lose rep power. (I think.) I have 7, now i'm back down to 6. It may have something to do with the quality of your posts as well as the quantity. And (I'm guessing here) it may also have something to do with threads you've started and how people respond to them. DBlack, correct me if I'm wrong, please.

I did some reputation tweaking this morning. It's a pretty complex system, so I took some time to go over the formula, and tweak it to reflect my strategy for our community.
The reputation indexes had to be reset, so unfortunately it cleared yours out. I won't reset it again. Since the board is young, I felt it's better to do it now than when the boards huge. As you can see, I gave you some reps back.
It's really too complex to appreciate, but used effectively it great way to reflect a members peer value.

Thanks Toylin for "guess-a-mating" :) and reminding me to post as well as give "props"
Dblak thanks for clarifying and I really appreciate what you do to make this site user friendly and fun for all that post.

It's Like That
Due to the current financial restraints the light at the end of the tunnel will be turned off until further notice.

Well, Toylin, you are close, let me correct your guesstimation a weebit:
Members don't lose rep for not posting or repping. But overtime, their lack of activity becomes a compounde reflection on their rep. The less you 'speak' the less people value your words....seewhatimsayin? In otherwords, it will be hard to be someone with a high post count x,xxx, and membership ages, with a low rep. That indicates a user that gets bad reps. As the community grows, so does the likely hood that people will rep u.
Toy guessed - "And (I'm guessing here) it may also have something to do with threads you've started and how people respond to them"
She's exactly right in that comment.

Residents are no longer allowed to give negative reputation. You can only give positive. Due to the potential misuse of this feature, It will be reserved for elevated priviledge groups, moderators, supermods, and Administrators.

OHHH man!! Just when I graduated from "Newbie" and thought I knew how this site works, now I'm seeing "rep power" all over the place. I thought I read somewhere that you did away with "reps."
Can somebody point me to the latest rules on this?

Sorry for the confusion. We silently added it back this weekend. Reputation feature is used on alot of sites running Vbulletin forum software. We made some adjustments to it, so people are less intimidated or concerned by it.
Most black boards don't have such a feature, so a few of our members were overly alarmed to it. That's understandable.
Nothing to be fearful of or worry about. Read up on the Reputation rulez and how to use it, and over time you will find it to be a insightful measurement of member reputation as defined by the community.
