I love my people but it's a bitter pill to swallow when we choose to close our eyes to the many problems that our race has until someone tells us how it really is. Obama just stated what is, our race has a high rate of deadbeat dads. We don't want to hear anything negative about our race but some things we need to improve upon. It's a reality that shouldn't be. It's time for us to wake up.
i've tasted bitter pills worst than this. when was the last time someone heard him speaking this way to yties. i havent heard it. every time i hear him speak its good things about yt people. like they dont have deadbeats, welfare recipients, or drugged out folks in their community. i wonder what he'll say about the yt 17yr moms wanting to get pregant and raising their kids with NO FATHER around.

Wonderful Response About Obama Statement

Thank you, Ms. Che_Butta! Someone sees the comments for what it is. I, too was raised without a father so I know what he meant even if he was married to my mom. I don't know him.

This is exactly why I asked about "The Value of a Black President." A Black President means nothing to the Black Community - really. Until a Black President is simply a President, we have accomplished nothing. And, for the Black Community in specific we gain nothing (except false pride) from a Black President, unless we ORGANIZE!

Personally, I agree that our problem is one of a lack of personal responsibility. I do acknowledge that there is a systematic problem. However, being a student of African History, our people are too smart to be held down by the means of "the oppressor." The "Mothers and Fathers of Civilization" must be able to overcome, right?

I don't even mind Obama ignoring Black Organizations. Honestly, what have they done for us lately? What value do they carry? Are they affecting any meaningful change? The answers: Nothing, none and no.

If we had powerful Black Organizations and worthy Black Leaders there'd be no question that Obama would address them. He would have to! He addresses AIPAC because he has to...we don't know if he wants to...we do know he has to. There are consequences and repercussions if he doesn't address them. There are no consequences...no repercussions...for him ignoring any Black Organization.

So, at the end...it comes back to where it starts: personal responsibility. It's our fault...if we build a meaningful Black Organization and create a Black Political Agenda then we can speak out...until then, we need to build.

Come and Get Your Reparations!

Not to say that African people don't have a problem with a good family but you are right about Obama's stance on every issue having to do with African people.
He has not once spoke on any issue that would criticize white folk and what they do to us. He has not once criticized the US for all of the terrible things they do to us daily. Rather he says the US has had a bad history but everything is ok now like Sean Bell didn't get shot by police 50 times. Like Javon Dawson didn't get shot in the back twice by police, like the Philly 3 didn't get beat down by a gang of police.

Obama has never represented anything that African people need and no one else can either as long as they are working for the Republican or Democratic party or any other party that African people haven't built to speak to our own interests!

We need Self-Determination!!!

Exactly, Northeast! Self-determination is key! And, that's the value of Reparations. Any Black Agenda developed by those parties they built will only be to our detriment - even if developed by a "Black" Republican or a "Black" Democrat.

On top of that, our established institutions - our Black Organizations - have bought into that system: hook, line and sinker...hanging "We the People" out to dry. So, step one must be the overthrow of the so-called "Black Establishment."

Come and Get Your Reparations!

What is it that some expect from this system; of which Obama is an Operator in, such that some get upset when the Big-O follows through with his program/agenda?

Obama is not going to replace this system with a new one. He is an Operator. He is not an Owner.

As an African Centered Black man, I don't expect Obama to do any more; or less, than any other figure-head or Organization that thrives under this particular Matrix. I will USE him as an image (cuz that's all he is) to my children - when I tell them they can be anything, then direct them to use their extraordinary talents to make the African Diaspora a stronger body.

That's what I will use the Big-O for. His brown skin and wooly hair. His dark skinned Black wife; kinda dark skinned...heh. His politics have already been written down for him. He ain't got a choice. He is an Operator. He is not an Owner...

Exactly! He is first and foremost a politician. So you know where his loyalties lie. The only change that Obama can bring to the white house, is a change of color. That's about it. He's playing the same game they play, and the American public seems to fall for it everytime.

Naw... we don't want no Jesse Jackson who is just as much apart of the Democratic Party as Obama is.
And we don't want no Al Sharpton who goes out and calls on the Federal Courts to give justice to Sean Bell cuz the local courts weren't acting like they aren't apart of the same system.

What we want is a Black Power a Black Freedom, a Nappy Head, Big Lip, Broad Nose, Boom Box on your Shoulder Freedom. Where we can speak into our own interests and take control of our Resources and our Labor to Benefit us.
We want to Be Self-Determining just like any other Healthy Human being wants to be.....

It don't work like that and won't because they'll shut that ONE negro down. It's up to all of us to do our parts INDIVIDUALLY and COLLECTIVELY for our people and our movement. C'mon man, this is 2008. We're not going to get a Huey or a Malcom type of cat to EVER become president at this point in the game.
You right that we need to take responsibility and we can't wait for an individual and we should never look for an individual we should look for the masses to get organized and make history cuz thats how it happens not saying it just pops out of thin air. But when we struggle we should be struggling for the whole community to take action cuz that motion will get us what we want.
And I am not looking for a Malcolm or Huey to become the President of the US.
YOu could never have a Black Power in system based on white Power it just wouldn't work out.
We gonna need our own system based on our interests. We gonna need to take control of our communities outside of this colonial domination we are in. That is the type of organization we need and if we don't work for this then we will always be having this discussion and we will always be looking on the news waiting to see the next African get killed by the police. We will always be getting kicked out or gentrified out of our homes. This type of stuff will always be happening unless we build the necessary organization and take the necessary action!!!

Not One Step Backwards!!!

No Compromise! No Surrender!

Black Power, This Time till its Won!
