I remember the story of an ex-slave who was confronted by hooded night riders who came up to his home and demanded he vote a certain way and against the party of Lincoln. But, that ex-slave recognized the voice under the hood as belonging to an ex-slave master who used to beat his slaves routinely even if the person had done nothing at all. That ex-slave related to another that he would stay with the party who had freed him. Of course, things have changed. The party of Lincoln is no longer the party of Abolitionism but rather the party of big business and racial conservatism so no one get me wrong here. The point is that these "loud mouthed black leaders and their liberal allies" freed us from the chains of Jim Crow (lynch mobs, harassment, disenfranchisement, etc) while white conservatives and the blacks they picked to speak for us were the people seeking to hold us down. Hey, Frederick Douglass and white Abolitionists freed us from the evil slave master and his black overseer dogs. So, if old master or one of his attack dogs comes up to you and tells you how bad Douglass is, I bet that ex-slave (I wish I had his name) would say, even if it is true, consider the messenger. After all, the messenger did all in his power to crush you while Douglass fought to free you. The Douglasses of today may give in to the faults of being "loud," greedy, and lustful but in spite of their faults, they fought to free me. What were these other guys doing ? I'll stick with the Douglasses of today. |
