Me & My Pen - AfroChat - African American

Me and my pen,
been best friends
since the age 10
where do I begin?
I was writing in big chief tablets
me and pencil
my small mind, the only utensil
writing about the flowers and leaves
i grew up like stuck like old oil spots
and hearts that grieve.
Went through the average drama
as a young man
losing my virginity
and my mind
was that the game plan?
Read books that had me shook
dodgin the dopeman
and trying to find a girl
I could put my hope in.
Still alone just me and my pen
documenting the sin I was in.
Having night terrors about fallin
daydreaming all about ballin.
Back to my pen still I was crawling.
Until the day I stopped writing.
Closed my pad to deal with demons I was fighting.
Took three years before I picked it up again.
She never let me down,
it was just me and my pen.
Now after all this time,
scandals and petty crimes,
folding paper and counting dimes.
I managed to rewind,
looking at the paper trail
looking at the tears and hearts that I failed.
I cannot see just like braille
But I feel it and im still here to tell.
There's glory
though most days it was gory
even when the world ignores me
My pen still documented the story.
Who cares if you dont
Who prepares if you wont
It doesnt really matter in the scope of things
Life's not hard,
it just stings.
Thank God for poems that sing.
They make the sounding music that swings.
As for me,
I sit home in the late night
documenting the struggle and the fight.
Because when the day ends.
I realize
Its just me and pen.

this is a good piece. i like how it tackles the power of writing through the pen. the pen, although lifeless, is a powerful tool when put to use. it moves, creates a revolution. :)

well,

there is a few spots here and there. Mocha life down on Almeda in 3rd ward is one. They have open mike night usually once a week. (i haven't been in a long while). West Cafe 5757 on Westheimer has poetry reading still I believe, I think on Wednesday nights but Im not sure. Check Starvingpoets.org, they may have a few spots or events in mind.
