Sleeping through freedom
Since its the eve of the fourth of the lie.
I will rest my weary head
between dvds and a teena marie cd.
I desire no fireworks and barbecue.
I just want to lay my head on a pillow,
and let the rest of the world pass me by.
Yeah, I will rise to spend time with my baby.
I might even manage to get to the picture show.
After all its a day off, right?
While the fireworks work my nerves,
I will rest lazily listening to mozart.
I desire no family gatherings,
no retrospectrum of what freedom means to me.
I will let the poverty pimps
pump and prime the masses of black folk
with lullabies of revolution.
Me... Im just too tired
to hear another speech,
to read another book,
to relive a day that this time next year
we probably be doing the same ol same.
While negroes pack the groceries stores,
pack the parks,
pack the beaches.
I will reach for the remote
and push mute.
Yall can have this day that way,
if ya want.
Me...
I'd rather sleep.
Tell uncle sam and uncle leroy,
I'll catch em next year.
It is what it is.
