Unhappy Why Is The Older Generation...

Bashing the music of today so badly? I mean, I was having a discussion with my father about this two or so days ago.
He was bobbying his head to some old-school rap...saying "See, that mess today-that t-pain, etc." He called OUR music popcorn...saying that the rap back then was !sh, classic, etc. I brought up how, even the generation before the 80's was bashing he music to the ground too---he got a little tongue tied, stating that the music in the 80s was highly appreciated by the older folks. Because it brought something new to music...that really pissed me off. I wanted to keep the argument going, but...its my father (lol).
And t-pain is nothing new? It sounds "corny" to everyone else, but this is OUR generation...I mean I could go down to talk about Lupe Fiasco, etc. I mean people from OUR generation around OUR age range.

Anyways, stuff like this gets to me, why is the older generation always bashing us? Im so sick of it, we just want the older generation to be by our sides...I know we have had it easier than many people before us, Im probably labeled just another spoiled brat---who's not afraid to bring this up.
Whether a song sounds "dumb" to you, someone always has to generalize our generation like we are not sh...this has really made my blood boil for the longest!

...and yes, that comment Ice-T cream lovin' behind made about Soldja Boy, got to me...(even though I dont like Soldja Boy)

It's not that the older generation is bashing you. It's just that a lot of the so-called music they make today makes no sense that's all. From time to time I find myself bobbin' my head to RUN DMC, Whodini, and The Sugar Hill Gang because the lyrics made sense and they weren't into woman bashing, fighting among one another or trying to figure out who had the biggest CRIB.

Now days all they seem to talk about is how much money they have, how many cars are in the garage, how many grillz they own, how many skanks they have in the limo with them and how many blunts their gonna roll in one given night . Makes no sense to me but I'm a product of the shool of old I guess. And believe me when I tell ya, I'm on the younger generations side but I just don't care for their choice in music. My teenagers like listening to my "Old Fashioned" music LOL... They like my old LL Cool J (Round The Way Girl) He didn't call her a HO. And Queen Latifa (Ladies First). Just too bad the music world has reared its ugly head and the music is no longer the same.

And glorifying strippers! Lawd hammercy! I will say I don't like the lyrics but the beats are great to dance to! But it's the same beat in every song one artist makes. They just change the rap but make the exact same song, over and over again over the same beats.

Agreed... this music today is NOTHING compared to music of the 70's, 80's and some of the 90's. Some of the music you hear today is sampled over the above forementioned tracks. What are these rappers/singers singing today...lollipop...please. They are not true lyricists like what we had back in the day. There was a message in teh music then, nothing but crap now. Go find yourself an old skool cd and see what I mean. No comparison from the then music to the Now.

There are a lot of reasons why this generation is getting bashed. Record companies and radio stations #1 get a skillet because they are not promoting or spinning records that have any social commentary. Our music historically, always defines or identifies where we are. During the Reagan/Bush I era, hip hop documented the struggle to be free through socially conscious music. Record companies had no choice but to deal with artists because the artists were saying something. DJs either even had to deal with it. As Chuck D said in "dont believe the hype" "I get on the mix late in the night" But I remember hearing PEs record in the mornings and afternoons on the radio. That shows how strong the music was. Back then, we had happy rap, but it was done in good taste and it provided BALANCE!!! Today, record execs and radio people dont know what that is.

Skillet #2 goes to the consumers. The science of marketing and business is to find a market share and fill it. Now people do not care about whats going on a global scale. Gimme some airhead nonsense that does not speak to the people to inspire them. Hit the clubs, have a tip drill, buy somebody a drink, garbage. All of it. Being an old school head so to speak, I dont support hip hop. I dont buy records, NOTHING. I keep my ears open because I work with young people and I need to relate to them where they are. No matter how much I might hate their music or taste, its up to me as an elder to discern and educate them.

Skillet #3 goes to artists who do not study music and its impact. Young people are either being cheated or just do not care about music. They are letting the sub-culture dominate their focus. In all genres of music, if an artist wants to be taken seriously, they must study the art before they came around. This is something my own step son is now experiencing. He wants to be a rapper (nowadays who doesnt). So instead of crushing his dream, I tell him to listen to the old school. Learn rap patterns, metaphors, delivery and such. I pop in a Big Daddy Kane's first hit, RAW to show him. He couldn't help but respect it and like it. I showed him first hand that Lil Wayne who is alright with his, (i take nothing from him) isnt a genius. I would probably cut more for the young man if he actually said something.
Skillet #4 goes to BET. (already) BET hasnt been relevant in years. Its a crying shame what that network is doing to young black people.

So to the young people. learn your history. Older heads do not have to like your music. Many of us cant relate to it. It looks like a minstrel show. There are artists out here saying something, but just like Afrika Bambataa's song "searching for that perfect beat" You gotta seek it out. Its not on the radio, I can tell you. If technology is driving the music, then somebody should unplug it because nothing significant is getting through. As far as Ice T is concerned. It is what it is. Was it right. NO. Not at all. Collipark should be concerned with his artist's longevity instead of lining his pockets. He's from the old school, he should know better. Lastly, in the so-called golden era of Hip Hop, things were very terrible socially and economically. The music reflected that. However, today things are a whole lot worse. Its just sugar coated and sanitized for mass consumption. People forget that the last LA riots in America was only a few years ago. Katrina a couple of years ago, etc. Given these circumstances, who's talking about it in the music. You cant dance your way through the struggle. Yet, that has been Satan's trick, to make people think... EVERYTHING IS ALRIGHT. GO HEAD AND DANCE, DO THE SUPAMAN, SPIDERMAN, BATMAN. HAVE FUN ALWAYS. DONT TALK ABOUT RACISM, IMPERIALISM, AND WAR. EVERYTHING IS ALRIGHT. KEEP DANCING. There is nothing wrong with being young and wanting to have fun, but you better read the papers, and the handwriting on the wall.

Skillet #4 so correct as well as your other thoughts. BET is one of the most harmful networks on TV.

Moe,

Pay attention to the lyrics of the most popular hiphop artists today. Then compare those lyrics to the hiphop artists of the 80-90's. Therein lies your answer.
