I believe that everytime you help somebody, you've made things a little more pleasant for them for the moment, and in some cases for a lifetime. Some people are sincerely appreciative of your help, and others are in greed of your help. It's always smart to recognize the latter.
If it means letting a mother with an arm full of grocery and a baby in front of me to check out, then I'll do it, or during my shopping, stop to assist an old man who's stumbling around looking for a certain item. These things are small, but could mean a lot for these people. I don't expect to get anything in return, but as it relates to karma, it is always a
given when you do help someone else. And I guess that's what make you feel good inside, all the time.
