Whether we are brothas and sistahs depends on what paradigm you speak.
Seeing Black men with non-Black women, especially beautifull ones like "Latinas" brings up all kinds of issues with us. It is more than how close we may or may not be to the other ethnicity.
Anyway, YOU say we are brothas and sistahs but I am glad you did not say we were all "Black." I have yet to meet one Puerto-rican or "Latino" claiming to be Black. I don't care how Africoid they look, they claim to be Puerto-rican, Mexican, etc...
Plus, I'm also sure that Puerto-rican peoples look at YOU crazy for being with one of their own. At least here in America they would. So it's not just us.

By history, Puerto Ricans would be Berbers and the Moors--the flip side of Black people so to speak. I myself do not feel a "kinship" with Puerto Ricans. However, you have to live with her---so "crazy stares" should be the least of your perception. It appears to me that you are seeking validation for her by seeking approval from others.
Find your comfort zone and be happy. That is all that you can do.

True. I came up in East NY and East Elmhurst, Queens, and was as likely to get with a Puerto Rican or Dominican as my black sistas.
Funny thing is I never heard African Americans get p'ed off by latinos using the N-word until I moved to Maryland. That was a culture shock for me.

"Funny thing is I never heard African Americans get p'ed off by latinos using the N-word until I moved to Maryland."
Out of mere curiosity, since it became a "culture shock" to you in the realization that other geographical locations do not condone the use of the "N" word, from whence you came, if you called a Latino a "wet-back," for example, by the same token...they accepted it as such and were NOT offended?

As asinine as it may be, there have for some time been those of us who use the N-word like it's a term of endearment, and the Latinos who grew up around us used it as such in our presence. Does that mean they didn't use it in a derogatory fashion behind our backs? All I can say to that is I wasn't there so I don't know. I have however heard them refer to themselves as N-words.
Now if one chooses to associate the N-word with blackness, we must remember that many Latinos are of African descent themselves, fully representing the yellow-brown-black spectrum.
As for the term "wet-back," I've never heard any of them use it, not as a term of endearment towards each other nor in a derogatory fashion. I therefore cannot expect African Americans where I'm from to have heard it and it turn used it around their Latino friends.
The acceptance of Latinos as "brothas and sistas" is apparently heavily influenced by region. When I speak of Latinos, I'm generally speaking of Puerto Ricans, Dominicans and Cuban because those are the groups that lived among us. I know little of Mexican-Americans, South Americans, etc. in the way of personal interaction. FWIW, Maryland has large Central American population in some locales, a group with which I am largely unfamiliar.
Does that help to shed some light on my earlier statement(s)?
