I've always heard that the phrase "I just don't think we're a good fit" is very politic.
Only get more honest if they keep persisting.
"Look, you're a nice (guy/girl), but I just don't feel the same way about you; I'm sorry, I don't mean to hurt you by saying that, but you deserve the truth."
That way, they can still keep their dignity intact.
As for the not-wanting-to-even-be-friends thing - just try "We'll see. Let's just take it one day at a time." |

Lets break these down for a second.
Face-to-Face -- best way to do it but if the person you're breaking up with is crazy then be prepared for something to go down.
Telephone -- not good to do it unless you and the person you're breaking up with are not able to meet up with one another in person; like long distance relationships.
Text -- seriously, this is dumb. if you test it then, that means you can call the person and let them know.
Email -- can be bad as getting a text message but this can be used only if there is no other way of contacting the person.
