Black Women are Least Likely to be Married

Posted Jan. 17, 2007 – For probably the first time, more American woman are living without a husband than with one, and Black women are less likely than anyone to be flying solo, according to a New York Times analysis of census results released Tuesday.

In 2005, 51 percent of women said they were living without a husband, up from 35 percent in 1950 and 49 percent in 2000. Also, in 2005, married couples became a minority of all American households for the first time, a trend the newspaper says could shape social and workplace policies, including the ways government and employers distribute benefits.

More striking, though, is that of all women, Black women are least likely to be married. Only about 30 percent of Black women are living with a husband, according to the Census Bureau. That compares to about 49 percent of Hispanic women without husbands, 55 percent of non-Hispanic White women and more than 60 percent of Asian women who are without husbands.

“For better or worse, women are less dependent on men or the institution of marriage,” said Dr. William H. Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution, a research group in Washington, D.C.

“Younger women understand this better, and are preparing to live longer parts of their lives alone or with nonmarried partners," he said. "For many older boomer and senior women, the institution of marriage did not hold the promise they might have hoped for, growing up in an ‘Ozzie and Harriet’ era.”

Other factors leading to the trend also include the fact that women are marrying later; they are living longer as widows and after a divorce; and they are more likely than men to delay remarriage, analysts concluded.

Let's see, you got almost 1 million of our men locked down in prison and the ones who are out suffer an almost 55% unemployment rate and a visious system of racism hell bent on destroying black people in general. It is a wonder 30% of women are married.

You are still young sis,and you have had time to get educated. You have a good career,and hopefully will know real love,when you find it. Again, most folks don't have hair on their arse until they're almost thirty. I said this to my youngest child plus,or minus a word or two a couple days ago.

Your thang is not going to burn up,if you're not into a serious ish right now. You can be the best, that you can be now,and prepare,when the right situation happens. Being alone is better than being in a wrong choiced marriage. Peace and good luck! :)

I know big bro' but we (black women) already knew this. Who told them to broadcast it to the rest of the world. If it were the other races that were only boasting 30% you never would have seen this article.

It seems as if black women are scaring away the few remaining black men with their bad attitudes. Not to mention being difficult and high maintenance. NOT ALL black women are this way, thank goodness.

I suppose this is why the divorce rate is up among black married couples.

My girl says this all the time. Why do they feel the need to constantly put us on blast like this? If it were the case w/any other race we or no one else would know of it. But we all know why they do this no?
