If he want's her to keep then, she keeps it. However, the law requires that gifts made in contemplation of marriage, i.e., engagement ring, can be recovered without regard to fault. But if it was me I would probable want it back.

no i would not give the ring back unless I really hard some hard feeling towards him. This would be a rare case, I would give it back if it was a ring ofr his mother, etc.

I'm surpised anyone would think that they are entitled to keep the ring. The ring is a symbol of that which in the case of a breakup, is no longer. Why anyone would think they have to right or desire to hold on to it perhaps says alot more about the true state of the relationship.
....totally beyond me.

i wouldnt keep it...whether it ended on good or bad terms, to me the ring would be a reminder of something that could have been but wasnt.  why would i want that around? i'd give it back even if he was ok with me keeping it. i'm not entitled to it...it's an engagement ring and if you're no longer engaged and on that road to marriage, why keep it? ill buy my own damn ring
