HIV Transmitted To Babies Through Pre-Chewed Food

Boston, MA (AHN) - Babies can acquire HIV by eating pre-chewed food prepared by their infected parent or caretakers, researchers revealed. According to scientists, the virus is transmitted through the blood and not the saliva of the infected person who has bleeding gums or even mouth sores.

Pre-chewing baby food before giving it to the babies is a practice among poor or even developing countries where people can't afford to buy baby food or the equipment to grind up food for babies who can't chew because they have no teeth.

Three cases were reported in the United States from 1993-2004. Epidemiologists from the centers, together with researchers at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis and the University of Miami, closely and carefully scrutinized all three cases. They ruled out breast-feeding, sexual abuse and needle sticks as the reasons of infection.

Now initially I thought, who the hell pre-chews there babies food. But then I read the article where "they" say that this takes place amongst the poor or developing countries. But as you know, I don't take the media/governments word on anything - it's a recipe for disaster.

I grew up classifed as "poor" and my mother didn't pre-chew my food. Have you heard of this? Have you pre-chewed food for your children? Have you seen this take place in so-called under-developed countries?

as a teenaged mother i did. but my grandma stopped me and showed me how to pureed my babies food instead.

hmm, thank you for opening my eyes. it's obvious that Ive just never considered this before.

it's really not a good idea to pre chew our babies food. if i ever was to start all over(which i won't), i would smash, cut, or pureed my babies food that i cook. it's healthier that way.

I feel you sis.

But, I guess in a perfect world, without disease etc, we wouldn't have to worry about such things as transmitting dis-ease to our babies.
