Don King aims to be the black Bob Hope in Iraq
Don King aims to be the black Bob Hope in Iraq
Thursday December 22, 2005
The veteran boxing promoter Don King, is in talks with the White House about staging exhibition bouts in Iraq to raise the morale of the American forces.
King, 73, campaigned with President George W Bush at the last US presidential election and has been a staunch supporter of the military, providing free coverage of his shows for more than 20 years to forces stationed overseas. Now he says he wants to be regarded as "the black Bob Hope of boxing".
He added: "I want to entertain the troops, raise their morale and let our soldiers know that the American people are 100% behind them. It will be an unforgettable, historic event. I'll even stage a true championship match if I am allowed."
King's main promotional rival Bob Arum is to promote a World Boxing Council heavyweight title fight between the champion Hasim Rahman and James Toney, probably on March 18 in New York or Atlantic City.

Is this what armed forces need to take their minds off the war??...watching two guys beat on each other? Bob Hope always traveled with girls in skimpy outfits.

Well Saraphen, I guess the government feels the fights will help motivate morale. Afterall, when our troops go into battle, they definitely don't hold hands with the enemy and sing :whistling Cum Ba Ya.

Don King has lost credibility with me. Politically, he capitulates to which ever party is in power at the time. When Clinton was in power, he was a Clinton man, and now that Bush is in the White House, he's a Bush man. There's no doubt about it, Don King is the consummate confidence man.

Make no mistake now, he is no different then your 50 Cent, he is about his hustle and more power to him.
Now as for as Clinton and the Bushes, they are both on the same team. If you notice, whenever there's a crisies they are standing side by side . So in essence, you can't really get caught up in that political . but that's my two cents.

I agree with you on the new Clinton-Bush "alliance". They are supposedly bitter enemies, but yet you can see them smiling and playing golf together. The political lines have become more and more blurred, especially over the past 10 years.
As for Don King, he is good at what he does, but still wouldn't do business with him. :)

They're political enemies, not bitter enemies. The two are different things.
