More Companies Ending Promises for Retirement

The death knell for the traditional company pension has been tolling for some time now. Companies in ailing industries like steel, airlines and auto parts have thrown themselves into bankruptcy and turned over their ruined pension plans to the federal government.

Now, with the recent announcements of pension freezes by some of the cream of corporate America - Verizon, Lockheed Martin, Motorola and, just last week, I.B.M. - the bell is tolling even louder. Even strong, stable companies with the means to operate a pension plan are facing longer worker lifespans, looming regulatory and accounting changes and, most important, heightened global competition. Some are deciding they either cannot, or will not, keep making the decades-long promises that a pension plan involves.

I.B.M. was once a standard-bearer for corporate America's compact with its workers, paying for medical expenses, country clubs and lavish Christmas parties for the children. It also rewarded long-serving employees with a guaranteed monthly stipend from retirement until death.

Most of those perks have long since been scaled back at I.B.M. and elsewhere, but the pension freeze is the latest sign that today's workers are, to a much greater extent, on their own. Companies now emphasize 401(k) plans, which leave workers responsible for ensuring that they have adequate funds for retirement and expose them to the vagaries of the financial markets.

People who learn early in life how to invest will be the only ones who can retire. All the rest will have to work until they are too sick to work, or they until they die.

I'm already acting like retirement from a company or the state's obligation is completely fictional.

At the rate things are going with the economy, I would say that you're on the right track . The fall of Eron has proved that everyone should have Plans A, B, & C in place during retirement.

There are people where I work that had to return to work after they retired just to pay their healthcare costs. One man gets SS and his state retirement but he still came up short. I don't know if he had any retirement savings or not but more then likely he along with many others did not. The ones that managed to put something away have not returned to work. I have one retirement check coming in but I am saving for my retirement in case I make it to SS retirement age because I don't expect to get anything from Social Security. I will probably get a state retirement though.

As i have posted before, after the whole Enron thing companies have started to scale back on benefits. Which only tells us that more companies are involved in wrongdoing when it comes to our retirement funds.

I also think it is all an effort to get the government to pay for medical, and to get the privatization of Social Security rolling. Which in-turn only means higher taxes for us. But YOU BETTER START SAVING AND INVESTING FOR YOUR FUTURE.

Precisely. More or less, Brothers and Sisters need to start their profolios earlier in their careers. So, when retirement comes, they will have a nice nest egg thats independent of their employer and government sponsored pensions which may not be around.
