Race For Detroit Mayor Enters Final Hours; Could it be the End for Kwame Kilpatrick?

DETROIT -- The race for Detroit mayor has entered its final hours as both candidates made their push to win over voters on the eve of Election Day.

Incumbent Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick started his day at 5:30 a.m. Kilpatrick greeted customers at the Clique Restaurant on Jefferson Avenue, and was moving on to an interview at a local radio station. He told Local 4 that he thinks he can change the minds of some voters who are leaning against him.

Hendrix spent the morning making calls to local radio talk shows before stopping at the AFSCME Local 25 office and the City County Building in downtown Detroit.

Hendrix also had events planned for late Monday and overnight before he heads to the polls to vote on Tuesday.

He spent Sunday visiting some Detroit homes and talking with residents living in shelters, trying to impress upon them what he said was a need to have housing for all citizens.

What success has Kilpatrick had? Is he too inexperienced to do the job?

After nasty race, mayor seeks city, regional unity

On his way to becoming Detroit's greatest comeback story since Chrysler, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick asked for forgiveness, played to voters' fears about suburban meddling in city affairs, turned on the charm and claimed a mandate from God.

From tacitly embracing secretive groups attacking challenger Freman Hendrix to implying that Hendrix was a tool of suburbanites, Kilpatrick went all out in his successful bid for a second term.

He even took off his diamond stud earring.

But will some of the mayor's tactics make it harder for him to build the regional cooperation that has eluded him during his first four years in office?

Kilpatrick is a self-centered, borderline corrupt elected official who has done more with the mayor's seat to better his own standard of living than he has to better the city he was elected to serve. His reelection is bad for Detroit, a city that needs strong leadership very, very badly.
