Minority Students denied diplomas over cheering

America has lost its frigging mind ...

Ill. Students Lose Diplomas Over Cheers

At a high school graduation ceremony, in Galesburg, Illinois, several students were denied their diplomas because the school decided the cheering from the crowd was too loud.

Say what?

The one picture Yahoo News showed was of a black student, so of course I kept reading cause I figured, this has got to be a case of white folks acting a fool. The race of the school officials was not given but, sure enough, five kids were denied diplomas -- four black and one hispanic.

Thats the one of the reasons I why they didn't let me walk mainly because I was too militant and told the teachers, staff, and the rest how most of what they teach in the school was lie's .........Also i didn't show up for all of the pre-graduation pratices but the main reason was because I told them I wasn't going to tell my family not to be proud of me sooooooo long story short I didn't walk.

But I know dayum well that those kids got their Diplomas regardless because to pull back for years of sitting through lies and propaganda and not getting my "paper work" would start a riot with me and my family and others rushing the school...............but thats just me

That's egregous! They want to erase years of a kid's work because of a childish act that was momentary and hurt no one? It's almost as if they look for reasons to deny minorities the victories they work so hard to achieve.

This is some straight-up petty racist BS. Denying students their diplomas because a crowd was loud?

I'd be contacting a civil rights lawyer on this.

How about denying a school accreditation and state funding because the officials are too racist? How about that? Does that work for them?

Together + Unequal =

Separate - Equal =

Separate + Equal =

* 14 year old Shaquanda Cotton gets 7 year prison sentence for 'shoving' hall monitor.

* 10 year old Derek Jackson gets suspended from school for having a short haircut.

* 7 year old Autumn Asante speaks the truth in a righteous poem and the 'judicial' system attempts to remove her from her father.

I hope we all can see what's going on here. Once again America's true colors are in motion. The aftermath of 9/11 was the platform and opportunity for white people to reveal their white sheets. Have you noticed since 9/11 white talk show host, white politicians and white people in general have been much more brazen in their attacks against Black people?

Whites are trying to use our children to set an example. This is about white people using letter of the law and civil policy to intimidate Black people. This is their way of letting us know where our 'place' is and how far we can go.

Before they overtly used violence as a form of control. Today the use civil and criminal policy. Presently they continue to use the law and code of conduct in a more insidious fashion to rift our families. So really... what has changed since slavery and Jim Crow?

White people who write and vote for the majority of public policy use these same policies to perpetuate double standards against Black people in regards to civil and criminal matters. These very same double standards are being used against the Gayles family as we can clearly see.

Overall the system looks for any small detail to charge Black people with an offense. Anything! This provides law enforcement with jobs, keeps the court system fiscally sound and appropriates Black people out of social circulation.

Dr. Kamau called it right:
"And we have to start thinking about a solution to the problem. So that these young sisters and brothers who are here now, who are 15, 16, 17, are not here 25 years later talking about these same problems."
My generation of black folks, I am 54, have for the most part let our children and grandchildren down. We focused on getting good jobs, SUVs, Black Ski Summits, crusies to the islands with Sinbad, and just basically trying to integrate in with White Folks. Some of us are making pretty good money. They let us wear a tie at work. And, we have a circle of white friends who we convince ourselves are not racist. Beyond that, we do NOTHING to prevent the beasts among us from feeding on our young.

We Must Wake Up! We Must Work Together -- each of us have equally valuable contributions to make toward the final solution --- one that ultimately involves a world where there are no longer any people who think of themselves as white.

Or, we can spend the rest of our days posting messages on AfroChat, and congratulating each other on being so down and relevant, but otherwise effecting NO change at all to a world system that feeds on our young.

Cheering ban costs five students their H.S. diplomas

GALESBURG, Illinois (AP) -- Caisha Gayles graduated with honors last month, but she is still waiting for her diploma. The reason: the whoops of joy from the audience as she crossed the stage.
Gayles was one of five students denied diplomas from the lone public high school in Galesburg after enthusiastic friends or family members cheered for them during commencement.
About a month before the May 27 ceremony, Galesburg High students and their parents had to sign a contract promising to act in dignified way. Violators were warned they could be denied their diplomas and barred from the after-graduation party.
Many schools across the country ask spectators to hold applause and cheers until the end of graduation. But few of them enforce the policy with what some in Galesburg say are strong-arm tactics.
"It was like one of the worst days of my life," said Gayles, who had a 3.4 grade-point average and officially graduated, but does not have the keepsake diploma to hang on her wall. "You walk across the stage and then you can't get your diploma because of other people cheering for you. It was devastating, actually."
School officials in Galesburg, a working-class town of 34,000 that is still reeling from the 2004 shutdown of a 1,600-employee refrigerator factory, said the get-tough policy followed a 2005 commencement where hoots, hollers and even air horns drowned out much of the ceremony and nearly touched off fights in the audience when the unruly were asked to quiet down.
"Lots of parents complained that they could not hear their own child's name called," said Joel Estes, Galesburg's assistant superintendent. "And I think that led us to saying we have to do something about this to restore some dignity and honor to the ceremony so that everyone can appreciate it and enjoy it."
In Indianapolis, public school officials this year started kicking out parents and relatives who cheer. At one school, the superintendent interrupted last month's graduation to order police to remove a woman from the gymnasium.
"It's an important, solemn occasion. There's plenty of time for celebration before and after," said Clarke Campbell, president of the Indianapolis school board.
In Galesburg, the issue has taken on added controversy with accusations that the students were targeted because of their race: four are black and one is Hispanic. Parents say cheers also erupted for white students, and none of them was denied a diploma.
Principal Tom Chiles said administrators who monitored the more than 2,000-seat auditorium reported only disruptions they considered "significant," and all turned in the same five names.
"Race had absolutely nothing to do with it whatsoever," Chiles said. "It is the amount of disruption at the time of the incident."
School officials said they will hear students and parents out if they appeal. Meanwhile, the school said the five students can still get their diplomas by completing eight hours of public service work, answering phones, sorting books or doing other chores for the district, situated about 150 miles southwest of Chicago.
Gayles' mother said she plans to fight the school board -- in court if necessary -- to get her daughter's diploma. The noise "was like three seconds. It was like, 'Yay,' and that was it," Carolyn Gayles said.
American Civil Liberties Union spokesman Edward Yohnka said Galesburg's policy raises no red flags as long as it is enforced equitably. "It's probably well within the school's ability to control the decorum at an event like this," he said.
Another student who was denied her diploma, Nadia Trent, said she will probably let the school keep it if her appeals fail.
"It's not fair. Somebody could not like me and just decide to yell to get me in trouble. I can't control everyone, just the ones I gave tickets to," Trent said.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Why are the students suffering because somone in the audience cheered for them. And on top of that, they can only get their high school diploma after 8 hours of community service, when they didn't even do anything WTF!!! Now I can honestly say that some people get out of control at the graduations, but it's GRADUATION! Sometimes alot of these kids are the first ones to obtain diplomas in a family, so of course they're going to be happy. I just don't think the kids should have to suffer for something someone else did.
