We have that ban where i'm from and to an extent I understand the need for it b/c some ppl missed hearing their childs name called b/c some ppl do not know how to celebrate quickly. However they have not taken it this far to get them back, I think that is wrong. My thing is anyone who doesn't like you could holler out. My cousin had this happen to her and she snatched her diploma off the table. My child would have hers minus the community service.

Why did they sign the agreement if they had no plans to honor it?

They should have refused to sign.

I saw this story on the internet a few days ago and I can understan both sides of it. On the one hand you have a family that is excited about the child graduating, a child they've followed through school for 12 years, through many tests and homework exercises. So of course they are going to be happy/expressive when the child walks across the stage.

On the other hand, you have another family happy for the same reasons as the other family, only they never got to hear their child's name called because others were too loud during their celebratory efforts. They can never get that moment back again in life.

Yes, I can see where this is a problem for both sides. Sad.

If they don't attempt to call a name when there is noise that won't be a concern. You don't punish the graduates for something they cannot control. That signed agreement has no legal weight IMHO.

Charlie, I too thought this maybe the route to go. But if they paused after all cheers, imagine how much longer the commencement exercises would be. And in these neck of the woods they are long enough. Our graduating class even opted not to have a keynote speaker so that it wouldn't be as lengthy.

At my daughters graduation it was announced that excessive cheering would result in the offenders being expelled. There was a group of people behind us that hollered like they had lost their minds with several graduates and even had a few cow bells. The administration let them get away with it for a few episodes, then they finally had security escort them out. The people surrounding them got up and cheered.

The offenders were punished not the graduates. This should have occurred in this instance as well. Those kids deserved to receive their recognition.

I feel ya Sumyr. Then I'd opt for Matrixone's post where the offenders are sent away.

Say what?

The one picture Yahoo News showed was of a black student, so of course I kept reading cause I figured, this has got to be a case of white folks acting a fool. The race of the school officials was not given but, sure enough, five kids were denied diplomas -- four black and one hispanic.

Huh?!! And somehow this was the fault of the grads? Amazing.
