Wendy’s manager shot over limit on chili sauce
Drive-through customer gets angry about denial of extra condiments
May 30: A Wendy's manager is shot after refusing to give a customer extra chili sauce. WTVJ's Hank Tester reports.
MIAMI - A Wendy's manager was shot several times in the arm early Tuesday trying to protect the restaurant's chili sauce, authorities said.
A man in the drive-through argued with an employee because he wanted more of the condiment, police said. The worker told the customer that restaurant policy prohibited a customer from getting more than three packets.
The man insisted on 10, reports said. The employee complied, but police said the customer wanted more.
When the manager came out to speak to the man, the customer shot the manager, Miami-Dade police spokeswoman Mary Walters said. He was taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
The shooter fled with a female passenger.
"I did not know I got shot," store manager Renal Frage told WTVJ-TV in Miami. "When I went back to the office, I saw blood pumping out of my arm, and I was shocked. I was checking myself out and couldn't believe I got shot over some chili sauce."
Frage added: "I got shot over chili sauce. I was trying to figure while in the hospital why someone would shoot me over some chili sauce."

I always though those policies were stupid. What do they think you're going to do with the extra sauce, sell it on Ebay? Not saying the brotha should have been shot, but isn't the customer always right?

"A LOT of crazies out there...the company might want to re-think this "so many only" policy, and also devise some form of protective plexi-glass, for example, so that employees do not have to open doors for shifts such as this one that may place them in harm's way."

Well, in the inner cities near where I live, the doors are usually locked and the people can only get their good through drive though only.

The customer isn't always right. Some people take things way too far and turn a minor thing into something major. There is never a good reason to shoot a person over trivial matters. Let's see how much chili sauce they get in prison.

As much as i like eating at Wendy's, i must say that their new policies suck. They even got tight with the butter and the sour cream. They don't even want to give you spoons. You have to ask for them.

This is a tragic story as when the assailant is caught he will serve time for "chili sauce." I'm glad the employee wasn't fatally harmed in this madness.
But in defense of Wendy's and other franchises, they have to protect their inventory so to speak, which protects profits. They have a set amount for each customer say 3 - with no more than 5 rationed out. Let's say that each customer demanded 10, this would cut into profits. We say that it is only sauce or ketchup or whatever it may be, but imagine the extra cost incurred for this overage and whose going to pay for this overage? That's right the consumers (us). To keep prices down and to be able to offer these $1 menus, they have to cut costs somewhere and adhere to company set guidelines.
Now that I'm done with my soap box, I can't tell you how many times I've gotten mad at Wendy's for either not giving me any ketchup for my fries or not enough to accommodate my tastes - usually 5 packets. And I must have two containers of sweet-n-sour sauce for my chicken nuggets and two packets of salad dressing for my salad and they only want to give me one. But I've never thought of shooting anyone for this, now kicking some tail is another story......kidding.

I used to manage a McDonalds and they would tell us all the time a certain amount of sauces and ketchup up packets to hand to customers. Simply because before, we would just grab a handful and give to the customer without thinking. But the VP over our store would let us know that we were handing our raises right out the window. From that point, we had a certain amount for everything to give customers i.e. 10 piece nugget = 2 sauces. I think Wendy's does a terrible job protecting of their workers. I live in SC and a couple of months ago a Wendy's employee shot the manager and one other worker before the store opened. They still don't know what happened except the guy robbed the place, but they didn't have good security cameras set up to see what happend. Even now, they still haven't taken better precautions after the shooting, to help the employees.
