Chilly weather setting in today will be reality in South Florida for more than a week.
The far western edges of Broward and Miami-Dade will feel coldest, with temperatures bottoming out in the mid-30s Friday night and Saturday morning. Frost is possible. Warmer points should expect lows in the mid-40s and highs in the 60s.
''It's the beginning of a long time before we see normal temperatures again,'' said Joel Rothfuss, a National Weather Service meteorologist.
But first: Fort Lauderdale's 86 degrees Wednesday made it the hottest spot in the nation.
Lows in the teens are predicted for the Panhandle and upper 20s for the area west of Lake Okeechobee.
Frost could kill new blooms on citrus trees and shrink 2008 yields, an industry spokesman said.
