Gambian President Claims He Can Cure Aids In Three Days.

President's 'HIV cure' condemned
A claim by Gambian President Yahya Jammeh that he can cure Aids in three days has been lambasted by a leading South African HIV/Aids specialist.

"I'm astonished. The danger of a president standing up [to say this] is shocking," Jerry Coovadia told the BBC.

Mr Jammeh said last month he had begun treating 10 patients on Thursdays with secret medicinal herb ingredients.

His health minister backs his claims, saying in trials so far patients had gained weight and physically improved.

"A response within three to 10 days and a three-day course is almost inconceivable for a disease like HIV/Aids," said Prof Coovadia, who heads the HIV research team at the University of KwaZulu Natal and is a member of South Africa's Treatment Action Campaign.

He said that science was many years away from finding a cure "so the fact that someone announces a cure like this is exceedingly difficult to accept".

'Confidence'

President Jammeh, who says he can also cure asthma, made his announcement to a gathering of foreign diplomats last month.

"I can treat asthma and HIV/Aids... Within three days the person should be tested again and I can tell you that he/she will be negative," he said in a statement.

"I am not a witch doctor and in fact you cannot have a witch doctor. You are either a witch or a doctor."

Gambian Health Minister Tamsir Mbow says the herbal medicines are taken orally and applied to the body.

"We cannot actually tell you the type of herbs we are using presently, it will be known to the whole world later on," Dr Mbow told the BBC.

One of the patients currently undergoing the treatment is Gambian university lecturer Ousman Sowe.

"I've noticed I've increased weight substantially over the last 10 days. I am no longer suffering from constipation, but we have yet to receive result of the tests," he told the BBC.

"I have 100% confidence in the president and I'm taking the medication with all confidence.

Risky behaviour

But Mr Coovadia said it was tragic that The Gambia had a "political environment that allows a minister of health and a president to violate every foundation of science and public health."

"The entire exercise is circumscribed by secrecy - that's not how science works," he said.

It would be impossible to measure the negative impact of Mr Jammeh's claims, but it could lead to risky sexual behaviour, instead of following preventative advice, he said.

The World Health Organisation told the BBC it did not wish to comment on the issue at this stage.

Last year, South Africa's health minister came in for severe criticism for promoting a diet of garlic and beetroot to those with HIV, while not rolling out the anti-retroviral drugs which are the only recognised treatment.

South Africa has now reversed its controversial advice.

I doubt that this is true, but my thoughts are this:

1. I believe the Plants on Earth do have everything we need to survive and heal ourselves. The Asians have always known this, and the South American Natives have always known this, which is why they have survived for so long. There are soo many trees and plant species in South America that we don't even know about yet. Who knows what cures they might contain, but we are destroying the rain forrest so we may never know. I would not be surprised if a cure came from plants.

2. Since HIV was started by the U.S. government I fully believe that they have a cure and will never release it to the public.

3. If number 2 is incorrect then even if the pharmacy companies found a cure they will not release it because it is not profitable to do so.

I'm interested in the test results which they say are to come later. If they are found to be negative, then people with the virus won't care if the have to do a raindance and sip bear claw soup, you won't be able to keep them away and they will come by the masses.

The smallest country in Africa is this morning playing host to one of the longest queues on the continent, as hundreds of people line up for miracle cures for asthma and Aids, promised by the Gambian President.

Scientists have reacted with horror to a claim by President Yahya Jammeh that he can cure asthma on Fridays and Saturdays and HIV/Aids on Mondays and Thursdays. All patients need is a referral from a doctor and the willingness to queue up at State House in the capital, Banjul.

U doubt "this is true;" yet u say, "...the Plants on Earth do have everything (needed) to survive & heal ourselves." Then u assert that "Asians have always known this" Pray tell how do u know this? And that "the South American Natives have always known this..." How do u know this and which "Natives?" do u speak about?

Then the king of your self-contradictory position is shown via the "conclusion" that "I would not be surprised if a cure came from plants."

I conclude that u've made an obvious racist statement. To imply that Asians & S. American Natives could do it, but an Azanian (S. African)? Nawwww no way!

For others who may be unaware an elder Azanian VusamaZulu Mutwa boldly announced 1999 via David Iche's site that he could cure AIDS and a whole bunch of other diseases the Western (European/amerikkkan) claims not able to cure. He even gave the name of one herb: Sunderlandia, and said it'd been used to cure a disease during one of his people's earlier epidemics. He mysteriously disappeared from the Amerikkkan scene and D. Iche didn't mention'im again, to my knowledge. Then upon returning home to Cape Town, his life was threatened often. This wise man, keeper of his people's Stories; a "bush doctor;" a sculptor; artist etc. Who wanted to help America deal with its AIDS scourge. Mind u, I saw the herb listed at shops in London, England and at a combined distributor/wholesaler in I think Johannesburg.

I wonder why VusamaZulu Mutwa's life was endangered after returning from the USA?

A couple of local bruthas also say they can cure AIDS. One Dr. Sebi (who has a website) was arrested by federal cops and had to be released; after a long battle I've seen copy of a FDA letter approving his right to make the claims he did. The other is a Reverand in Florida who still produces an herbal tea, called "BLESSED TEA." He too has a website. The formula treats more than AIDS patients.

One thing the world's major pharmaceutical conglomerates can count on is a believing gullible public's acceptance of their subterfuges. Aren't they backed by validated tests, conducted by major university labs & those of funded private labs? And aren't there statements of evidence by an army of "experts?" Publicized in major media outlets to the masses? I mean what right minded citizen will not believe their grand refutations, etc. or claims; Who? Why he or she'd have to be insane! Right?

How can an unbelieving citizen disbelieve them. Their own government backs the experts' claims, studies, reports as evidential facts!

Psssst: in this case I don't. But then am I a citizen? Still fighting for CIVIL RIGHTS and the pursuit of happiness? Still threaten to lose a right to vote?

When I read the article I was in two minds. It is possible that he could have the cure, and even if he had I don't see the
'prestigious organizations' accepting it. If anything they would probably try to get the remedy and sake it is a fake. A few years later down the line, this same 'prestigious organizations' would say they have found the cure. It would be the same cure that the President have. That is just how these 'prestigious organizations' operates.
