IMO, a spanking is a far cry from child abuse. We all understand the emphasis of the original post and I'm sure we"ve all witnessed that type of thing for ourselves. I know just what Dubfly was getting at because I've seen it happen plenty of times...in the mall, grocery stores, at the park, where ever. And while that white mother stands there trying to brush off the embarassment, I look at my son and can't even begin to picture him coming out of his face like that to me. I'm not saying that he doesn't need a reminder every now and then and on his off days, he begs for that tune up which I certainly honor his request. I know for a fact that does not equate to child abuse. Ever wonder why today's youth is so out of control? No question in my mind...children are being raised far differently then those of previous generations. Children now threaten to notify the authorities when a spanking is about to be the next thing they experience. (wonder where they get that stupid idea from). From morals ethics and values all the way to discipline including a good old fashioned butt whoopin, things have changed and not necessarily for the better. Make no mistake, I'm not saying spanking your children is always the answer. There are other methods of discipline but sometimes they really do need a tune up....we all do! Pardon me for stepping in here but I just had to come back to this thread to comment on this post. I understand that we won't always agree with one another, were not supposed to. I also understand that there will be times when our disagreements will escalate and sometimes take on a life of their own, which is natural. What I don't understand or appreciate is how and/or why we really get beside ourselves and make threats in a post directed towards one, any or all of our family members. Not only is it not necessary, it's disrespectful to whomever the threat is directed to as well as the entire fam including the staff who make this site available to us. I don't know what kind of little surprise you had in mind but I know it didn't involve positivity and that in itself is the exact opposite of the purpose of this site. Let's get it together family. This anectdote is so real for many caribbean parents and it did not kill us black people are running countries today all ove the world and certainly here, the rod was surely used.

As a black mother of two teenagers i RESERVE the right to punish then with the rod, a stick, a pot, a broom,..I brought them into this world (yes yes God through me) and i will take them out. They are GOOD children with great futures ahead. AND they KNOW we mom & dad LOVE them. we are there .

To those who may disagree with corporal punishment, to each his own but i think it is unfair, myopic, dishonest, and outright stupid to say it is as a result of beating that our black community is in the state that it is in. RUBBISH.
What about the quality of the education , what about the disparity in the social systens and services available. what about the imbalance in the justice system.. medical system, Do you think these in any way may have contributed to the state of a people and many suceed in spite of...

ps and hellll yes we are better mothers than many many of those that some of our black mother want to emulate. Who mothered them in the old days, even today.. please

I've seen that scenario played out many times. When i have witnessed that with my children (picking them up from school in the UK) i would always explain to them what was wrong with the way the child spoke to the parent and what i thought the parent should have said to the child. They know that kind of behaviour is wrong and would not serve for them to even copy it. White parents think their kids can do no wrong, and as funny as the mini story was, is a real reflection on how their parenting skills differs from ours.

I dont believe in sparing the rod and spoiling the child, it serves no purpose for our race and society. Black kids are mis-labelled and stereotyped by society enough. The last thing i would want is for some one to tell me that i failed my kids, because they are on the streets robbing, murdering etc, as a result of allowing that kind of behaviour/attitude.

My children a great kids, but they are not angels. If they are out of order/control, i give them a warning. If they continue with the offending behaviour then its a walloping on the butt, automatically! They know 100% that they are loved, cared for by both my husband and i. They also know they are disciplined by us, because we LOVE them and want the best for them.

Abuse IMO, is when one has lost control, are angry and have lost the meaning of discipline.
