Wow! You and your husband deserve accolades for taking on such a life altering yet rewarding decision.

I thought about adoption (in the past), but have since put those thoughts on the back burner - for now. I hate the way they almost make you jump through hoops (literally) to adopt here in the states and there is so much red tape. I know these guidelines were developed with the best of intentions in mind, but I feel overall with so much "red tape" to cut through they are essentially "cutting" millions of deserving young children out of the opportunity of EVER achieving a family life. I didn't even mention how expensive it can get. I know some who only spent $3,500, but then there are stories of those that spend upwards of $15,000. I guess it depends on whether or not you choose to use a public or private adoption service.

But still though after hubby and I have had one of our own - we may still explore the possibility of adoption as there are way too many kids awaiting the chance at, well................Life. Kudos to you and your hubby for taking the steps to ensure one child has a life!

I am adopted, I moved in with my adoptive family when I was around 1, but the paper work didnt leaglize it until I was 11. I would like to adopt someday too, someday soon.
As for my experience, nothing was hidden from me. I have always known my birth mother and a few of the immediate family members, but I never knew my father though.
Both my adpotive parents died by the time I reach 13, so in a way I still ended up parentless.

We adopted him out of the foster system so it didnt cost us anything. All fees were paid for by the state. There are sooo many children waiting for a home. One of the problems I have seen is that they give bio parents to many chances to get their act together. As the children get older and exposed to more emtionally and physically damaging factors, they become less adoptable.
Queen Aminah, They say foster parenting is the way to go first. I will look into this once we reach that crossroad.

Whoa Chelbe, Sorry to hear this about your adoptive parents dying. What happened to you after they past on - did you stay with family members of your adoptive parents or your biological mother/family?

At that point, the adoption was already legal. My adoptive mother knew she was going to pass away so she wanted to make sure that was done. Plus my biological mother/family still were not in a place to take care of me, so one of my aunts from my adoptive family moved in and took it from there. Overall I have no regrets, besides the obvious, because the same things that my biological mother was doing 29 years ago that made her incapable of raising me are the same things she is doing now.
