Yes, I do believe that some of the "old wive's tales" actually do work. From my grand to god to mom, they all have given me advice to "cure what ails ya." I used to laugh...but now I don't. For some of their home remedies DO work. My fav is hot lemon stew, with a touch of brandy (if you prefer) and then "wrap myself up" and sweat it out. Works really well on chest colds. Tip: put some Vick's Vapor-rub on your chest too. Got a tooth-ache? Grab a cotton-ball, put a bit of clove oil on it and put on the gumline next to the tooth. Fever-blister? Use some ear-wax. Yep. Ear-wax. Got a Boil? Break open an egg, apply the egg-white, let it draw and it will bring a boil to a "head." Fat-back rubbed on the bottom of a baby's feet will draw out cold. More later.... :)

Wow Samoon, that is quite a list. The only one that I use faithfully is the Hot tottie. It's a severe cold killer.
Make hot teah, add honey, Lemon, brandy or cognac as strong as the person can handle.

Yes Black, I think that this has been around for generations. This is not in relation to this topic, but I gotta tell you...lol..it DOES pay to listen to the elder that has that story to share. Wealth of information I tell you! I know some of the "old folks" that are in 90 age range and they are HEALTHY. And more often, I hear them say that "back in the day" we didn't have this or that, and we didn't EAT this or that. Some of those lessons have fared well for me. I don't eat any veggies out of a can, the trip to get organic food is worth it, I watch my intake of red meat and pork. However, these very same people shared with me that they ate pork, cured it and so forth and that their "pressure" did not "sky-rocket." But then again they also GREW a lot of their food (thank goodness for Dr. Carver, etc.!) Studies now show that African-Americans are predisposed or have genetic markers for Hypertension and Diabetes. And some of the old folks shared that they didn't trust doctors. I'd say the culprits are the food industry (preservatives, additives, etc.) and historically Blacks have FRIED many of the foods eaten. Interestingly enough, Eskimos have the lowest incidence of heart disease. Could it be their main diet of fish, maybe?
Here's a thought. Chickens are injected with hormones to produce in greater quanity. When these chickens are eaten to nourish the body...WHERE are these hormones flushed? Hmmm. Just "food for thought."

^^100% true
I'll never forget, I had a bee sting one time and my grandmother took the tobacco out of her cigarette, wet it, and taped it to the sting on my chest.. the pain went away within a few minutes... amazed the heck outta me, 'specially since I hate cigarettes :D.

Taking a baby's diaper and rubbing the urine on his/her tongue, will clear up thrush.

*When a baby has a fever, cut an onion in half and put it in their socks. It draws out the fever.

What's your view of "home remedies" as u phrase it? Are u gathering material for a magazine article? A book?
No matter, but do you mind clarifying a bit what u see as a "home remedy."
Anyway I'll tell of something re one of our grandsons from a coupla weeks ago. He was bitten by a mutt dog; teeth sank into one buttock. My wife called of one those vans called an emergency ambulance for the record, after we'd checked the bite. That was for the record, in case my daughter wanted to take it further later on. The ambulance driver recommended grandson be taken to hospital for anti-rabies shot and stitches. I politely told him, no thanks. My grandson's butt was of flesh, not fabric. Didn't want him sewn with a steel needle. And I'm not sold generally on the ingredients of some of today's shots. To the chase: I made a formula of 3 different herbs, crushed and made into a poultice applied and covered it. The next morning two of the bites had disappeared from sight, the 3rd had closed nearly together; no more pain or stinging; swelling reduced; no unusual heat around the area. A slight scar remains, which in time will not be there.
There's much more I could tell of dealing with diseases and other "accidents" at home. No disrespect intended but rather than call what we and many others do home remedies, how about : tradtional Afrikan and other indigenous folk' healing techniques and treatments. Its called Natural "remedies."
The body will "heal" itself if aided properly. In my opinion. What do Christians call our body? A Temple? We like to treat like it is beyond praying and leaving to whoever else. Its my obligation and responsibility.
Hope this helps in what u're seeking.
Thank you

The baby is normally from newborn until about 6-7 months old. Old enough for the child not to be able to pull of the sock. Yes, I did do this with my oldest son. My children't godmother is into old remedies and I love to try those before filling them with a whole lot of medicine.
Now if it is a high fever, definitely do modern medicine. This is basically for when you catch it early and baby is a little warm to the touch.
