I've always been involved in the PTA in all of my son's schools. TRUE, I've also had the types of jobs that allowed for this, but I would't have it any other way.
When you have black children, black males especially, its important for parents to make their presence known. Not only to be informed about what going on in the school, but to support ur child's education. Sitting in those meetings I've only seen a few blacks among several white parents. However the presence of the black families was extremely powerful.
Sadly, I found that the students with active parents recieved better treatment from the school officials. Almost like saying if the parents care...then we'll care as well. Teachers pay close attention to their students and can spot a "neglected" child from a mile away. They seem to focus on those who they believe have a better chance for a positive future. By doing this, they throw ther rest to the wayside and don't offer them as much help or attention.Of course , I don't agree with this atitude towards our children, but it's a fact, I've seen it happen with my own eyes.
Personally, I don't think hectic jobs/careers is the main issue here. I think parents today are more focused on themselves. They put too many things before their own children, and as a result their kids have to suffer.

If not for parental input AND the students? No need for them to be there.

reason most parents arent more involved in their kid's schools is because, some of the parents either dropped out, don't care or have lack of education themselves. it can be other reasons also but ill stick to the ones ive posted.

There are many possible reasons (probably covered already in this thread)
1. The insane job hours they must have to take care of their child
2. The lack of teachers really giving progress reports on the child never really caring why the child may be failing because they get paid either way
3. Lack of education themselves and not understanding what the child is studying
4. Life- Problems in their personal life that consumes them and leaves the child to his/her own devices
5. Some of them just shouldn't have had a child....
But they can be many more reasons but these are some of the things I have seen and experienced myself growing up. Things today are harder for our youth and we (society) have been trained to use school as nothing more than "daycare" you are forced to send you child to school most of which don't teach them anything but how to "superman wit' it" or what boy's have that girl's don't.
We put so much trust in schools to educate our children that we fail to take extra care of our own.

in both of these videos tell me what u think of these 'concerned' parents at the oakland bay school district. in .... Back to School video and YouTube - Teacher gets knocked out by Mama.... was the teachers really concern for the parent's kids?
did anyone here go to a parents teacher conference? did it go well? my kid's teacher emailed me their progress so i didn't have to go. my baby girl just needs to stay focused on her math. my baby boy is doing better in his reading. now,...my hard headed teen age boys.....i have to go every day. i swear to this day i should have put them is boot camp school.

I applaud those parents that attended the teacher-parent conference. It's refreshing to see our Black community taking full responsibility in their kids education especially at that age (teenagers).
I am not to sure what to say about the second video. Why did the parent push her in the face? I didn't get what the teacher said.
@Afrocentric
It's very good to hear that your kids are doing well. As for your teenage boys just keep them motivated in whatever manner. It's usually a phase that they're going through.

thats a good question. Do you think it has something to do with the fact that this country is moving more and more closer to allowing children to be disrespectful to their parents?
Not to say a parent shouldn't stand their ground but I remember back in the day, if I acted up and the school called, they expected my mother to come up their and spank my behind, but now days, just the tiniest thing can be thrown in the pile as "abusive" = call child social services so many parents hands are tied.
I don't know......
Just curious and throwing that out there.

parents and schools
that sounds like just what school administrators would say. that's why my children are home schooled and I am in the process of establishing a cultural educational center. the public school system is a tool of indoctrination that exists to make our children clones and drones to the society. that's why when we graduate, we are LOOKING for jobs and a career and why most millionaires never finished high school.
What we need as parents to do is to take our children's education into our own hands, start our own educational and developmental programs and find our own instructors who will groom our children the way WE want them groomed.
I've already started :-)
