I wouldn't even debate it, i'd definitely celebrate my childs first birthday and all others after that one. The very pleasures that we enjoy in life are because we have life to begin with. We celebrate promotions, the signing of business agreements, graduation from high school, college etc why not celebrate life itself which makes all those other things possible. I love the photos of my first birthday. I was fast asleep in all of them whilst the adults enjoyed my cake and ice cream . I think it was lovely that friends and family got together to celebrate that i had lived my first full year on planet earth. I think the first birthday is very special. Despite medical advancements there are still children who die in infancy as a result of all sorts of complications. It's important to celebrate life.

I believe in acknowledgment of all major milestones, and some not so major ones. Kids need to know that they have accomplished something, and feel the love that people have for them. I had a party for my son's 1st birthday. It was in the middle of the afternoon, so he was wide awake. He tore the paper off his own gifts, blew out the candle on his cake and even fed himself a piece of it. He'll be 3 this fall, and we have the pictures of his party. He goes through them , and says to me: "it was my birthday Mommy. look. I had presents. I blowed my candle. Look. I had cake!" It excites him to see these things.

On the otherhand, I do understand that very young children do not really have a concept. The party goes on around them until the cake comes out, or the presents get opened. Most times, the child is oblivious, more interested in playing or sleeping that anything else.

If the kids don't party then we can't turn their daytime party into our nighttime party. Don't act like yall don't know what I'm talking about.
