Detroit Agriculture Tour highlights the Roots of a Healthy Detroit.

Imagine a Detroit where gardens fill empty plots of land and backyards erupt with juicy red tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, and rows of fresh Greens. Imagine a Detroit where success is measured by the pounds of organic produce grown from the soil and eaten by its citizens. Imagine a Detroit where communities come together to grow food and flowers in an effort to beautify and nurture their bodies and spirits. As the summer sun shines, and city farmers toil in their backyards and neighborhood plots, the roots of this new Detroit are taking hold.

See, smell and taste this new, greener Detroit, on Wed, August 9th, 2006th as Detroit Agriculture Network leads its annual tour of community gardens in Detroit. Beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Catherine Ferguson Academy at 2750 Selden (at MLK), the bus tour will feature just a few of the hundreds of gardens and gardeners that participate in the Garden Resource Program. Suggested donations are sliding scale $1-$20, which help to cover the cost of the tour buses.

Seats on the buses for last year?s tour filled up at 350 people, so early registration is strongly recommended by contacting Ashley Atkinson 313 237 8736 or via email aatkinso@umich.edu Buses will leave at 5:30 p.m. sharp and return at 8:00 p.m. Locally-grown foods and conversation will end the evening at a Harvest Potluck at 8:00 p.m.

Detroit Agriculture Network?s mission is to promote and foster urban agriculture and the sustainable use and appreciation of urban natural resources.

The Detroit Agriculture Network, Earthworks Garden/ Capuchin Soup Kitchen, the Greening of Detroit, and Michigan State Extension Wayne County work collaboratively to support community, school and family gardens in Detroit, Highland Park and Hamtramck. To participate in the Garden Resource Program or to learn more about urban gardening programs in the city, visit www.detroitagriculture.org or contact the Garden Resource Program at 313-961-3151.
