Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA)

The Federal Communications Commission issued an Order on Friday which requires facilities-based broadband access service providers and interconnected VoIP providers to be prepared to accommodate law enforcement wiretaps. The Commission found that these services can essentially replace conventional telecommunications services currently subject to wiretap rules under the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). Providers have been given 18 months from the date of this order to be in compliance.
