A proposal to end online anonymous posting
Kentucky Lawmaker Wants to Make Anonymous Internet Posting Illegal
By Kellie Wilson Kentucky Representative Tim Couch filed a bill this week to make anonymous posting online illegal. The bill would require anyone who contributes to a website to register their real name, address and e-mail address with that site. Their full name would be used anytime a comment is posted. If the bill becomes law, the website operator would have to pay if someone was allowed to post anonymously on their site. The fine would be five-hundred dollars for a first offense and one-thousand dollars for each offense after that. Representative Couch says he filed the bill in hopes of cutting down on online bullying. He says that has especially been a problem in his Eastern Kentucky district. Action News 36 asked people what they thought about the bill. Some said they felt it was a violation of First Amendment rights. Others say it is a good tool toward eliminating online harassment. Represntative Couch says enforcing this bill if it became law would be a challenge. Source: Kentucky Lawmaker Wants to Make Anonymous Internet Posting Illegal - Video - WTVQ 36 - Lexington, Kentucky This is another example of some of the disturbing legislation trying to get passed. Members of the EU and the EU itself don't seem to be fairing any better. So much for the free world. |

I'm on the fence about this one. On one hand we have a right to remain anonymous and on the other I see where this bill would be useful. I don't believe our personal info should show every time we post however I do feel as though registration with a valid email addy should be mandatory in order to post and/or reply. Taking it a step further, some circumstances should require verification of name and address making a person traceable. For instance, free email accts. If verification was done on that end, once an email addy is verified by a site, there would be no need to post our identifiable info. Also, this bill lays far too much of the responsibility and legwork on individual sites. If kentucky wants to know who we are then kentucky should be who finds out and not use sites as pawns to do their dirty work.
P.S. If I'm not making complete sense, please bare with me, I'm suffering through some very undesirable distraction. Lol. Peace and blessings to you and yours!

I don't either. It's too drastic of a measure. Not only an invasion of privacy, users are expected to provide this info and individual sites will be left to follow up or face fines? Ok Kentucky...if you say so. Peace and blessings to you and yours!

I think it's an invasion of privacy and has nothing to do with some bullying efforts...The way to stop internet bullying if strictly being bullied ONLY on the net...is to unplug the computer and dump it...don't allow computers in your own personal home and put a block on it..
Boy, these fat cats are so turning this into a communistic like country...at least smelling of some socialism .... I am NOT in favor of this..becaue with real personal info for the world to see each time you posted can be hacked into some Identity theft and hacker breaking into your personal records...wouldn't be hard..i would think...not at all.... The world is slowly turning into some surreal Horror flick...only this is real and not some actors... |

It will most likely get shot down. Even if it didnt, enforcing it would be pretty much impossible for most practical purposes. Its just interesting that people are actively trying to slice away at civil liberties so blatantly and more and more often.

Sound to me like a tactic to make the truth illegal. Most people ain't going to tell the truth when it can come back and bite them in the butt. Ain't nothing anyone can say about any opinions that ain't going to piss someone off and having your name and information right there is a dangerous thing, so no one will leave any opinions no more. It got to stay so anyone can say anything, no matter how we don't like what someone say or else we can't be saying what we want to say when we want to say it. Do that make sense?
