Windows is shutting down...

My PC rarely shuts down completely anymore. It gets stuck at that point, and I have to hold down the switch to make it shut down.

It used to happen only when I ran virus scan or anything requiring Norton. Then it got to where certain programs would still be running and they would hangup the shut down.

So I have been on this quest to clean up my PC of those programs that are hanging up. I found a lot of stuff in the registry that launched at startup that didn't need to. I use CCleaner to get rid of maybe one per week, and my shut down improves for a while. Then I found that if I ran CCleaner before shutdown and got rid of all Firefox cache, it would shut down. That worked for a few weeks.

I run virus scan, SpyBot Search & Destroy, and Ad-aware, weekly.

Now I spend more time cleaning my PC than doing any of my fun things.

Any suggestions for fixing this? Is it harming my hard drive every time I have to manually shut it down?

Sounds like some of your programmes are not closing, hence why your computer is not shutting down.

Looks like a job for 'apondonet'.

Calling 'apondonet'...................

What operating system are you running? Let's get some information on your system.

You apparently have a running process or processes that are preventing windows from shutting down. These are the worst of apps.

Right before you attempt to shutdown, let's get a list of all processes running on your system.

First, download Process explorer from Systinternals. In this zip file, copy the help file and exe file into your windows directory.

  1. download Process explorer from Systinternals. In this zip file, copy the help file and exe file into your windows directory.
  2. Create a shortcut of the exe on your desktop or startmenu.
  3. Run the program. You will see a large list of running processes. That should look somthing like the attachment to this post.
  4. Save this list by going to File, Save As. Give it a name and save it somewhere where you can easily get to it.
  5. Open the saved text file in Excel. Because it's a tab delimited text file, Excell will open it in a columnar format that is much easier to read. Do a search on google for any processes that you don't recognize.
  6. Paste or attach the text file on this thread. Don't worry, it reveals nothing personal about your workstation or your personal identity.
Hope this helps.

I'm running an HP Media Center PC. I won it in a HP promotional drawing at the State Fair over 3 years ago.

The Process explorer report is at the bottom. With the descriptions and company names, I recognize everything on there. My guess is that Media Center is the culprit. I can watch TV on my PC. I mostly do that when I record a TV program on my PC, and watch it on the PC. The PC comes with a lifetime subscription to an electronic TV Guide. It defaults to download the latest listing at startup. I just changed that to let me do it manually. If I don't do that download my session is more likely to shut down normally.

I think this trouble started when I upgraded to Service Pack 2 last year. I had to do a bunch of HP device driver upgrades before I could do the Service Pack upgrade. Most of the HP upgrades had to do with Media Center, the media center keyboard, and remote control.

There are also a bunch of Norton/Symantec processes on there. I don't know why Windows Messenger is in there; I don't use it. I have used MSN Messenger which is a different app, and I thought I had disabled Windows messenger. MSN messenger pops up every time I go to hotmail from Internet Explorer. Since I have made Firefox my default browser, I only use Internet Explorer if some function doesn't work in Firefox. It happens sometimes with hotmail.
