15 titles for PlayStation 3 launch

SCEA boss Kaz Hirai has said that he expects around 15 software titles to launch with the PlayStation 3 this November, responding to comments from publishers criticising the firm's slow release of information to developers.

Speaking to business news service website Bloomberg, Hirai cited the 15 title figure and said, "I don't think there will be too much of an issue," with regard to software availability at the launch of the system.

However, publisher bosses including Sega of America's Simon Jeffrey and THQ's Brian Farrell were both open in their criticism of Sony's treatment of PS3 developers so far, with Jeffrey telling Bloomberg that "there certainly will not be a lot of titles available" at launch.

According to Jeffrey, "a lot of developers" have not received development kit hardware from Sony yet - although final development hardware is meant to be shipping out this month - while Farrell claimed that THQ is not developing The Sopranos for PS3 because it's "too risky" due to the lack of final hardware specifications.

Other publishers, however, disagreed with Jeffrey and Farrell's comments - with executives at Activision, EA and Ubisoft all weighing in to support Sony's development support strategy to date.

EA Worldwide Studios boss Paul Lee said that the firm is "happy" with the dev kits sent out so far, while Activision CEO Robert Kotick told Bloomberg that although their systems are not "final, final hardware", "we know what the processors' capacity is - we have active development underway."

Kotick added that he doesn't expect that the first titles launched for the PS3 will take advantage of more than a fifth of the capacity of the machine, however, stating that "this is the most sophisticated piece of consumer hardware ever."

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot agreed with Kotick's sentiments, but compared the situation at this point to the same point six months out from the launch of the Xbox 360 last year. "We won't be able to take advantage of all the components of the [PlayStation 3]," he commented, "but it was the same last year."

I am so pro-Sony. I love Playstation, but I can honestly say I dont think the PS3 will match up to the XBox 360. (Dumb Microsoft, wont be satisfied until they have all technology under lock and key.)

Sony's recent behavior is just putting nails in their own coffin. The price they're asking for the playstation 3 is insane.

Tell me about it man. What is it, $499 for the core and $599 for the full package? I could get a new computer for that much. Now, I've been with sony since the first playstation came out, but if they don't find a way to lower that price WAY down before it's launch, then they just lost me to X-box.

Sony unveils net service for PS3
Sony has unveiled details of the PlayStation 3s online service and the list of 21 games available at launch.

The PlayStation Network will let PS3 owners play other gamers, chat, download extras, store images, video, or music and browse the net.

The network will be free to play or chat but users must pay to get downloadable games and other extras.

The PS3 is due to launch on 11 November in Japan, 17 November in North America and March 2007 in Europe.

Title race

While Sony is the undisputed console king with more than 105 million PS2s sold globally, rival Microsoft has set the pace online with its Xbox Live service. About 60% of Xbox 360 owners use its online system and pay a small annual fee to get access.

By making basic functions such as playing and chatting free Sony hopes to attract large numbers of PlayStation 3 owners.

PS3 LAUNCH TITLES
Resistance: Fall of Man
NBA 07
Genji: Days of the Blade
Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII
Call of Duty 3
Fight Night Round 3
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
F.E.A.R
Full Auto 2: Battlelines
Madden NFL 07
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire
NBA 2K7
Need For Speed Carbon
NHL 2K7
Ridge Racer 7
Sonic the Hedgehog
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas
Tony Hawk's Project
Untold Legends Dark Kingdom

The navigation system for the PlayStation Network is based on that used on Sony's handheld game gadget - the PSP.

This navigation system has a "Friends" area in which users manage online game play. In this area they can see if friends are online and what games they want to play. It also includes a basic social networking system that lets people swap text-based messages.

As well as giving users access to online gaming and the net, this browsing system gives access to any images, music or movies stored on the device. This multimedia content can be taken from the net, bought from the Sony PlayStation store or loaded via memory sticks or USB.

Via the store PS3 owners will be able to buy downloadable games, extras for games, movies and music. Downloadable games are expected to cost about $15 (£8).

A custom built version of the Opera browser is included in the PlayStation 3 for using the net.

Sony has also revealed the list of 21 titles that will be available for the PS3 when it launches.

The line-up includes a wide mix of titles - everything from sports to driving games and first person shooters. The top tier titles for the PS3, such as Sony's own Resistance: Fall of Man, are expected to cost $59.99 (£32).

In a bid to show off the high-definition abilities of the PS3 Sony said that the first 500,000 consoles sold in North America will include a free copy of the Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby comedy that stars Will Ferrell.

I read before that the only way Sony could be toppled (as the console leader) is if it fk's itself.

Sony's just fk'd up folks n' I'll tell you exactly why. First off, the company has opted for Blu-ray as it's optical drive for the PS3, it's not an option. Why's that bad? Read this n' my response to the article:
In the high definition horse race, it's HD DVD by a nose Secondly, the price point. It really hurt when I had to drop $430 for my 360 (even more so when I had to do it a second n' third time). Now Sony comes along and tells me that I've gotta pay $600.00 for a PS3 (for a hard core gamer such as myself the "core" option is never an option)? The taxes alone on that mo' fo's gonna be an additional hundred. They're outta their minds, Blu-ray or not. Lastly, 360 has had too long a run with no competition on it's heels or at it's side, a whole year. In the past the first to reach 10 mil. units has always dominated during that generation. M$ is very close to reaching that number folks, 5.5 the last I heard n' that was about 2 months ago.

Now I know it may sound like I'm a M$ fanboy but I'm not. I was on the PS before the Xbox was ever even thought about and then I moved on to a PS2 n' didn't grab an Xbox 'til it had been out for 2 years. They blew me away with their LIVE service, graphics n' HALO. I knew I'd have a 360 n' not a PS3, 'specially when GTA 4 will be released on both consoles simultaneously Oct 17, 2007, another blow to SONY.

It's not lookin' good for 'em...not at all. And you know what? They did themselves in but it's all premature, we'll see tho wont we? I predict 360 being the console leader with the Wii following n' PS3 in the back.
