Rockland lawmakers to name HRC facility “ Rosa Parks Human Rights Center”

Rockland Legislators David Fried, William Darden and Chairwoman Harriet Cornell announced they have introduced legislation that will name the facility that houses the county’s Human Rights Commission as the “ Rosa Parks Human Rights Center.”

“Rosa Parks’ life and legacy are vital components of American history,” said Fried. “Her humanity, bravery, and commitment to the American dream have provided all of us, in Rockland and beyond, with a better world in which to live and raise our families. By her selfless devotion to human kind, all groups have benefited. It is fitting that Rockland County name its Human Rights Commission in honor of the mother of the civil rights movement. Future generations of Rocklanders must know the story of this great African American woman.”

“Rosa Park, amply known as the mother of the civil rights movement, demonstrated tremendous courage when she refused to give up her seat to another passenger on that bus,” said Darden. “The mere thought of possibilities to which she could have encountered for her courage are endless, especially in 1955. Not only did her action change the busing law in Montgomery, Alabama but also had an impact on interstate busing laws by the ICC. It is a sincere honor to introduce this resolution to pay tribute to and express our great respect to a remarkable, very modest and distinguished African American woman.”
