Since a mention is made of "children," I suggest that instead of relying on major encyclopedia or unproven European authors, please use our Afrikan sources. Folk like Van Sertima, Runoko Rashidi, Dr. Finch, Dr. Ben, John G. Jackson, John H. Clarke and many many others have paid dues to make sound the sources we use. So that unnecessary mental struggles are reduced that comes with European sources. Notice here the writer's frequent use of words to express doubt about Imhotep's history. For example compare Dr. Finch's report on Imhotep's existence with this author's:

'The existence of Imhotep and his relation to the pharoah Djoser is attested to by a statue of Djoser, found near the step-pyramid of Saqqara in 1926, on which Imhotep's name is inscribed. In addition, the Egyptian architect Khnum-ib-re ('opening to the heart of Khnum'), living around 495 B.C., left an inscription which records the names of 25 of his remote ancestors, all of who were fathers and sons and wll of whom were master-builders.(10) The pedigree, according to Hurry, covers a span of 800 years, beginning with Kanofer, the father of Imhotep, and with Imhotep in second place. Imhotep in this record, is described as 'the chief of works, both of the South- and of the North-land, governor of the capital and vizier,* chief ritual priest of Zozer, the King of Upper and Lower Egypt, the son of Kanofer, chief of works of the South and of the North land'.(11) Gerald Massey called Imhotep 'the Egyptian Solomon',(12) and with good reason, for Imhotep was without peer as an architect and builder.'

Then the author likens Imhotep to Jesus and Christianity, without substantiation. Dr. Finch does write that "Imhotep's relationship with the pharoah Djoser...cursiously echoes the Biblical story of Joseph." When we remember that Imhotep's existence was over 2500 years before a mention of Jesus is written. One further point re his pedigree and existence: "His father was Kanofer who preceded Imhotep as a distinguished architect in the service of pharaoh ahd his mother was Khreduonkh who was from a high-born family that originated in Mendes. He was born on the 31st of May in a suburb of Memphis called Anktaui ('Life of the Two Lands') and served as prime minister, chief scribe, ritualist, and architect under the pharaoh Djoser of the IIIrd dynasty."

No "may haves" "could haves" etc. Clearly stated that such and such was the case. Chancellor Williams wrote that b4 he entered Oxford University to continue his studies, he was aware of whose school it was and who set it up. He said that when studying European works that often we can learn more from what is omitted than what is written. So with our children, especially, we must extend ourselves to ensure that the info we get is sound re our people. There still rages battles in the halls of academia on if ancient Kemetic folk were Black! In fact tomorrow Sun. 11/6/2005 Dr. Leonard Jefferies will speak in Afrikan Djeli here in Atlanta. He is one of the continuing combatants b n attacked by Zionist Jews.

I would suggest for young children use textbooks developed by Dr. Molefi Kete Asnate & Dr. Judylynn Bailey-Mitchell. These textbooks include a Teacher's guide , An Activity Book with the textbook. These are books I am currenty using and have used in classes I've taught in the community.
Classical Africa
African American History (A journey of Liberation
:
These books have comprehension review section, vocabulary & concept development section
timeline, global connection, multiple perspectives, center your writing, unite tests etc all kinds of suggestions & assistance in teaching the course.
and the answers in the teachers guide.
Another book " In Our Own Image" developed by Rochester City School District this book is not as complete as Dr. Asante's.
With these books one does not have to be a scholar and can be secure in teaching our history.

Htp! Yes and if I may say, for future peeps, our sistah Auset32 has pointed to two elemental concerns:

"With these books one does not have to be a scholar and can be SECURE in teaching our history."

During the mid eighties a few scholar/educator/visonaries attempted to blend into Atlanta's Public School curicculums OurStories. They also realized that our Afrikan descedent teachers did not themselves know how to teach our children about Kemet and or traditional Afrikan cultures. So a group of certified teachers were taught. The effort was shortlived; Atlanta Supertendent Dr. Jerome Harris, outta NYC, had his contract bought along with an unheard of "bonus" and was run out of town, so to speak.

Of course a European controlled school district in Oregon swallowed it "hook, line and sinker" quick fast and used it; as Dr. Asa G. Hilliard and others continued the battles.

And I add that parents must tighten up their knowledge of and practices in our Afrikan traditions. We must offset and replace much of what's generally put before our young, fresh and spong like minds. In light of who we are as New Afrikans in this land at this time. Easy changes can be made; e.g., the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey advised to surround ourselves with images of folk we love and who love us. Doll babies for our daughters should look like them. Not dyed brown Barbie Dolls. Picture books of our sheros and heros. We have what might be called a Shrine, a small table, with photos of recent family ancestors, no one else. We turn our family stories into "tale" like deliveries. My wife can always fill in the factual info. I improvise. I bend, reshape, expand and highlight whatever will please the Children, who love and remember a "performance." While trying to recreate settings. Its difficult for children of today to relate to say the times of Harriet Jacobs or Nat Turner or countless others.

I'm writing this to folk who have children in Public Schools. Bleeve me, it'll pay off e.g., if any of your young relatives visit Afrika. Like our 12 yr old Granddaughter who was not surprised this past Summer at seeing poverty nor of seeing eye pleasing botannica gardens, large farms, or at visiting a computer "cafe," beaches or a Rita Marley's Studio in Ghana. Or never hearing sistahs called foul names. Or being treated almost like little princes and princesses. In other words to see reality as compared to this nation's major media portrayal (propaganda?) about Afrikans at home and abroad.

Then its not hard for them to believe what is taught about the likes of a Imhotep and to dig a little that their generation have roots that live in them spurring them to build on their ancestors ideas and works.

Stay BlackNificient!
==============

More: CIBI (Council of Independent Black Institutions) is holding a conference this coming weekend in Washington, DC. on curicculum development for Afrikan run indenpendent schools. If anyone's interested contact me; I'll get more info.

Baba,

You just reminded me of the Portland Baseline essays and the lesson plans.

I have the set and used to use the essays as a resource. The lesson plans

are very well done and divided as to grade level. I am not sure if they are

still available. I wrote to the school district in Portland but that was many

years ago.

The last time I attended a conference I heard that the members of independent schools were looking for math and science textbooks developed

by African and African americans. The conference should be very interesting

Dr. Finch told a group here to not despair, re establishing AfriCentric schools. U kno how many r here today, gone tomorrow. A most common problem here is failure of our people to financially support dedicated and professionally trained Afrikan educators. The myth that public schools are "free" spaces out many of us. He recalled efforts since the 1960's and advised us that now is a time for planting seeds. I understand it; even tho Im not a teacher/educator. Or as Mama Marimba says: scholar/warrior!

See, if I were searching for an AfriCentric teacher, I'd pick your brain, online!!! Huh?

There's a trio of yung bruthas who've lived and studied in Ghana; one who's studied one on one with Dr. Fu-Kiau learning Kongo cosmology and language; all three speak I don't know how many Afrikan languages. All are members of assatashakur.org's site. One's teaching Swahili, a Kongo language, Yoruba and maybe Twi there. In fact they're part of an online Twi class now. Using camcorders and voices. That's run by AYA Institute. Another may be in Ghana now; see: http:zizibiantoko.blogspot.com/ All under 27 yrs old. Baaaaad yungstas! Such as they help me to feel my life's worthiness. Its understandable why Cheikh Anta Diop charged scholars here of Afrikan descent with the obligation to complete clarifying OurStories, and to reclaim our connections as leaders of a cultured peoples. And as u kno, Dr. Clarke called for: a Priesthood of specialists!

I highly respect and honor our educators who teach OurStories. Many, as u kno, many have "sacrificed" high paying salaried positions to struggle among their own kind. As it is, teachers generally are underpaid. As I speak with a few our Grandchildren's Public School "teachers" Its as if they've become like production line workers. Controlled by results of time and motion studies, forcing them to teach per "scripts" as they tell me. I've sat in 2nd, 3rd & 4th grade classes to witness it. Tires me out just watching. SHAMEFUL!!! Our teachers in Public Schools are b n turned into machine like workers. Im sure u can dig what its like to deal with children after Public Schools have done their jobs. Plus now our bright little children are b n assigned homework that could keep them busy til 8 or 9pm! Then, my wife and I wrassle with and refuse many after school special classes offered. Very gradually and almost imperceptably the little ones are offered such enrichment classes spiced with socializing manners. We do not send them there for that. The main thing b n done is preparing children to "take" tests! Forget the educating. We simply can not afford private AfriCentric schools for all of'em.

Aside: its 3 a.m. Im listening to a late nite radio show. Some "scholar" just flat out stated that the Egyptians were "caucasians" until they were invaded by Arabs in the 7th Century! And intermarried!!! So that's the kinda stuff we have to erase from our children/grandchildren along with them b n taught such madness!

Shem hetep.

jimihaze r u addressing that to Auset32?
