Jameel Reese and six other black students attended The Youth Genealogy Camp in New Orleans ,Louisana tracing their roots.
Instead of hiking , camping , swimming , goofing off they spent the summer at the month long day camp tracing family roots ,trying to find family members.
Campers pouring their heads in the library & The Armistad Research Center @ Tulane University going thru birth certificates and death certificates.
Jameel Reese found his great,great grandfather ; he was a casket maker and was sold at the age of 11 years old.
Akanke McKinsey 10 years old found her ancestor Homer Cyprien was the first black man to be invited to sit on afederal grand jury in Louisana.
Antoinette-Harrell-Miller the founder of the non profit African American Genealogy Connection has a cable-access show entitled :"Knowing Your Family History." in Louisana.The founder says she feels this is a positive influence in the community and instead of black youths killing each other this will motivate everyone to doing something positive.
