Is it wrong to explain the dark side of black history?

The typical black history subjects I hear are always MLK, (sometimes) Malcolm X, (little information on) Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks..and that's about it.

A large portion of the information circulated during black history month revolves around the peaceful ending it had..

Is it wrong to explain to the youth..I'm speaking of ages 15-18 (high school) the truth behind it? The hangings, the murders, the torture the unfair treatment?

I'm talking about the burning alive for looking at a white person in the face, or the police arresting Black's under false charges and letting them out in the night after calling the KKK to get them upon their exit..the Black Panther's assassinations...the Black's in the army who were sent to the front lines with cheap weaponry as a distraction and bait for the white soldiers to use as cover...

Is it wrong to expose the dark side of the history? The real bloodshed, the thousands of found, and even more thousands of not-found black bodies in the ocean? Thoughts...

No, it is never wrong to tell them the truth of things. Never wrong to tell them the fathomless amount of blood was spilled for the progression of their rights in this country.

You should never talk about the good without the consequences and struggles their ancestors went through here, as well as the rich history from which they were taken from abroad

No it's not wrong, it's a shame if you don't talk about that to our kids. My son is 7 and since 5 years old I've been banging it into his head about OUR HISTORY!!!!!! I disagree, Malcolm hardly get's mentioned with mainstream "Black History", we get the same MLK & Rosa that's about it that they speak about. These kids need to know all of this and too many times we as parents aren't passing down the real history. We depending on the school system to pass it down and you know they ain't gone give em the real.

Of course not. Rather, it's an obligation we have as parents and educators.

ironically a friend told me a story today of her daughter having an assignment on the positives aspects of slavery. The mother indicated there were none, the daughter then did something about lynchings and punishment, the teacher refused to mark the paper saying, the woman who was hanging from a tree in the supporting picture could have done something wrong to warrant such punishment......and this came from a black woman.
Needless to say we would be in the school tomorrow..... Pray for her

As parents we must de-brief our children when they get home

peace

There is never a wrong time. Just do it with some tact and be thorough.

I can't believe this..that's outrageous..I would definitely go to the school and complain, and I'm ashamed that it was a black teacher..shameful..
