Space is the Place -- Who is Sun Ra?

Sun Ra came up with the the saying or phrase, "Space is the Place". This meant: that the things between your two ears; your mind and imaginary should be used to trace your destiny or to get what you want in life along with making a place for yourself. Sun Ra reinvented himself. He started businesses in Philaphelia and Chicago, and educated people through music about the history and culture of black people. He had claimed to
be abducted by aliens and was taken to Saturn. Sun Ra stated that the Aliens told him to teach the world "how to love beautiful things". Sun Ra used his music to educated black people on their history and how to love themselves. He could play almost every musical instrument.

Nothing about Sun Ra's six-decade musical career could be called normal. He recorded somewhere around 200 albums, although no one knows for sure. He toured the world, was revered in Europe, and staged at least three 100 piece concerts, one at the pyramids in Egypt. He was the subject of several films, pioneered the use of electronic keyboards like Moog synthesizers, created his own independent record label, and influenced countless jazz and rock musicians. His pronouncements were drenched in his unique cosmic mysticism, and his band members claimed he had telepathic powers. Most importantly, he made music, as he wrote, "rushing forth like a fiery law."

I learned about Sun Ra through my son. He saw a documentary on Sun Ra in his Jazz class in college. This allowed my son to look at his artwork in a different way and see how important it is to teach our people or black americans their history through words or art and to let them know that they are beautiful regardless of what society may say.

I just wanted to share this thought with you and leave a little history on someone who should be remembered. Also, please visit http://www.weallbe.com to get information on other interesting articles.

Just curious; is this Sun Ra's rendering of what "Space is the Place?" Or someone else's?
